Holy Diver
Killswitch Engage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah yeah
Holy Diver
You've been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what's becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver, yeah

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun 'til you see the light
Oh we will pray it's all right

Gotta get away
Get away

Between the velvet lies
There's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life's a never ending wheel, yeah

Holy Diver
You're the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean
Some light can never be seen

Holy Diver
You've been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what's becoming of me, no, yeah

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean

Gotta get away, get away (get away)
Gotta get away, get away, yeah, yeah

Holy Diver, sole survivor
Your heart is clean
Yeah, Holy Diver (Holy diver)
Holy Diver (Holy Diver)

You're caught in the middle coming after you, Holy Diver

Oh, Holy Diver (Holy Diver)
Get away, get away, get away, come on

Overall Meaning

The song "Holy Diver" by Killswitch Engage is a cover of a classic rock song by the same name, originally recorded by Dio in 1983. The lyrics speak to the experience of the "Holy Diver," a figure of strength and resilience who has been through tough times and emerged triumphant. The singer urges the Holy Diver to "ride the tiger," to face the challenges ahead with confidence, and to not be afraid.

The song also touches on the theme of illusion and truth, suggesting that there is a "truth that's hard as steel" lying beneath the surface of the "velvet lies" of the world. The Holy Diver, as the star of the masquerade, is able to see through the illusions and survive.

Overall, "Holy Diver" is an uplifting song that speaks to the human experience of struggle and triumph, encouraging listeners to face challenges head-on and not be afraid.

@EclecticEcentric

I like it... I was doubtful at first, given that I often feel that metalcore tends to "dull sound out" as it seems to lack dynamics (silence in a song are often as dramatic as fills) - but I was pleasantly surprised.

Especially the vocals. Top notch.

Never heard of these guys before, but will now check them out... and perhaps add a bit more metal core to my catalog.

Excellent job guys (if you ever read this).

Cheers from Newfoundland (Canada)

Live well

@DanTheMan3

Tell people this all the time. A cover truly better than the OG

Right? I am ashamed to say I like it better than the original. I remember my dadā€™s disappointment when I said so. He always said ā€œthe original is best no matter how well the other artist covered itā€

@MrAirblown2009

@Scooby dooby with a doobie You know, as a musician/recording artist/singer/songwriter I can safely say. I don't have a favorite anything, because I dig on variety. There is a time and place for everything.
