Always
Killswitch Engage [2013] Disarm The Descent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In these moments of lost in torment
When the vast skies don’t seem to call to you
When the weight of this world press down
And the stars have fallen like tears

I am with you always
From the darkness tonight to the morning
I am with you always
From the life until death takes me

Monuments build to remembrance of me
The monuments fade and fall in decay
The memories of all that remains
As far as east is from the west, remember

I am with you always
From the darkness tonight until the morning
I am with you always
From the life until death takes me

When hope seems lost down and lonely
I am here with you always

I am with you always
From the darkness of night
I am with you always
From the darkness tonight until the morning
I am with you always
From life until death takes me

I am with you always
From life until death takes me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Killswitch Engage’s “Always” describe feelings of loss, despair, and the uncertainty that comes with heavy burdens. The opening lines convey a sense of hopelessness and disconnection from the world, as the vast skies fail to provide solace. The weight of the world is portrayed as a heavy burden that presses down on the individual, and even the stars seem to cry in sympathy.

However, the chorus offers a message of comfort and companionship. The singer assures the listener that they are not alone in their struggles, and that they will be there to offer support from the darkness of night until the light of morning. Even in death, the singer promises to remain with the listener.

The second verse speaks to the fleeting nature of life and the impermanence of physical monuments built to preserve memories. The memories themselves are what truly endure, and the singer encourages the listener to remember that they will always be there, regardless of physical presence. The final lines of the song repeat the chorus and drive home the message of steadfast support.

Overall, the lyrics of “Always” offer a message of comfort and hope in the face of hardship. The singer acknowledges the dark moments, but promises to be a constant source of support and presence, even beyond death.

I remember being a sophomore or junior in high school when I came home and my parents sat me down at the table to tell me something. My mom had Malignant Melanoma, no where near your diagnosis I know now, but when you're a kid, you just get told it's the "serious skin cancer". I dont remember what stage except it wasn't in the lymph nodes but wasn't just a spot, it was a deformed bleeding mole.

Regardless, they told me at the dinner table and I'll never forget that feeling. They told me it was cancer and there was a pause, and I got up and left the table and went into the next room, the kitchen. I opened the fridge, shut it, opened it, shut it, went to the sink, went to cupboard, got a cup, went to the sink, went to the fridge. I wanted nothing but had to do something, so I poured a glass of milk and drank it even though I didn't want to but I poured it and I didn't know what to do so I drank milk and went back to the table. The stupidest thing, but I just remember the feelings.

She had it removed with good margins, then they took more margins out and they were clean. She went on a drug trial of Interferon and for a year, i injected her 3 times a weeks with it. It gave her chills, anger and rage, full body aches, headaches, wrecked her teeth.

After the year ended, she had clean exams and blood tests and is still recovered almost 20 years later with no signs of any other cancer. I saw the results of that trial or a similar one treating malignant melanoma with interferon, and it had no statistical difference in survival versus placebo.

Oh well, but she took that medicine and year of her life for my family. I always remember her strength.

Here's to your remission and hers, and hope you and your bride-to-be can have/did have a great wedding despite this Covid world and a long happy life together!

In these moments of loss and torment
When the vast skies don't seem to call to you
When the weight of this world bears down
And the stars have fallen like tears
I am with you always
From the darkness of night 'til the morning
I am with you always
From life until death takes me
Monuments built in remembrance of me
But monuments fade, erode and decay
The memories are all that remain (all that remain)
As far as east is from the west, remember
I am with you always
From the darkness of night until the morning
I am with you always
From life until death takes me
When hope seems lost down and lowly
I am here with you always
I am with you always
From the darkness of night
I am with you always
From the darkness of night until the morning
I am with you always
From life until death takes me
I am with you always
From life until death takes me

I hate how people say that metal is the devil's music. There's songs like this that have a deep meaning and actually help people heal from trauma. Some people don't understand that.

Agreed. I'm in my mid 60s and a born again Christian. Ive been listening to alt/heavy rock and then metal since rhe 70s. I've been through a lot since I was in my 30s - including being diagnosed with very painful autoimmune conditions to cancer, job losses, deaths of family members and my husband almost died 2 years ago. Next to my faith, music has gotten me through the hard times. I listened to metal while undergoing radiation therapy and this past spring, helped get through an MRI of the spine. I'm a little claustrophobic and it helped me deal with being in the tube.
