New Awakening
Killswitch Engage [2013] Disarm The Descent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Run the race that will lead to nowhere fast
Trapped in the haze of this mindless false reality
Wandering a path laid out by fools
That they call "progression" where chaos rules

There is more to life than this
We are more than just this flesh
We are alive and our time has come
For a new awakening

Come death, come suffering, I will not live in fear
In this fleeting life where time escapes us
The path of least resistance is a slow, quiet death
I'd rather burn out than fade away

There is more to life than this
We are more than just this flesh
We are alive and our time has come
For a new awakening

I would rather die than live my life in fear
Out of step, no regrets in the new awakening

I will not live in fear
Live life with no regrets
I will not live in fear

There is more to life than this
We are more than just this flesh
We are alive and our time has come
For a new awakening

I'd rather burn out than fade away

Overall Meaning

In Killswitch Engage's "The New Awakening," the lyrics speak about breaking free from societal expectations and finding true purpose in life. The first verse addresses the feeling of being stuck in a race that leads nowhere in a false reality where chaos rules. The lyrics suggest that there is more to life than just existing in flesh and blood, and a deeper understanding is required to find true meaning in life. The chorus repeats this sentiment with confidence, declaring that "our time has come for a new awakening," indicating that the time has come to break free from limiting beliefs and embrace a new perspective.

The second verse addresses the concept of mortality, acknowledging that death and suffering are inevitable parts of life, and choosing to face them with courage and without fear. The lyric "I'd rather burn out than fade away" suggests that the singer would prefer to live life to the fullest and experience everything it has to offer, even if it means a shorter life. The song concludes with the singer reiterating that they will not live in fear and that there is more to life than existing within societal norms.

Overall, "The New Awakening" encourages listeners to break free from the expectations society has placed on them, embrace their mortality, and live life without fear. The lyrics suggest that there is a deeper meaning to life that can be found by embracing a new perspective, and that doing so can lead to a more fulfilling existence.

I don't think Adam will ever stop coming up with killer riffs and harmonies. That man is a machine.

@RobotDinosaur

I miss Howard, and I couldn't be any happier that Jesse still has that old fire in him. Howard is probably sitting back in his chair, proud that Adam, Joel, and the boys are still making great music. I cried manly tears of joy when I heard this song. I've had too many disappointments in music lately and this really cheered me up.

@SHMOWZOW7

I remember listening to these guys when they started. Losing Howard was a tragic loss,but they have made an amazing comeback with Jesse.
