Her 1995 self-titled debut album provided her first country hit, "Just My Luck", as well as the follow-up "Those Words We Said". Her follow-up album, 1996's Bitter Sweet featured a more pop-oriented sound.
She has also had significant success as a songwriter for others. She collaborated with Radney Foster on "Nobody Wins" and co-wrote Trisha Yearwood's hit "Believe Me Baby (I Lied)" (Yearwood also covered Richey's "Those Words We Said"). Maura O'Connell and Brooks & Dunn covered her song "Every River". Patty Loveless, Mindy McCready, The Greencards, Terri Clark, Cyndi Thomson, and other country artists have recorded covers of her songs.
Richey provided backing vocals on "Come Pick Me Up" on the 2000 debut album Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams.
In 2004 her track, "A Place Called Home", was featured in episode 16 of season 5, "Shells", of the Angel television series. The song later appeared on the Angel soundtrack, Live Fast Die Never.
On 7 July 2007, she performed in Washington at Live Earth.
Her album, "Edgeland," was released in 2018.
In 2020 she released A Long Way Back: The Songs of Glimmer, based on new versions of the 14 songs on her 1999 album Glimmer, in a more acoustic style. Reviewing the album for the Seattle PI, Jon Sobel says "Richey's mapley voice, always unmistakeable, has developed a sheen of gravitas it didn't possess in 1999. Just as important, the songs hold up. The slighter ones ("So It Goes," "Good at Secrets," "Gravity") carry more weight in their new, more airy settings, thanks partly to Doug Lancio's artful and sensitive production. The strongest ("Didn't I," "Can't Lose Them All," the sublime "Come Around") feel cooler, or more studied, and somehow at the same time hotter, the emotions more precisely sketched."

Come On
Kim Richey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Not a lot of choices there.
Do your job like you were told to
I can do that anywhere!
It's old town is tired of trying
This old town is on his knees
This old town is busy dying
Your only hold on me
Come on and go with me!
Come on, come on now
Leave the devil to the deep blue sea!
40 West, straight through Memphis
We won't stop till boil and springs
We'll see what tomorrow brings!
Come on, come on now
Come on and go with me!
Come on, come on now
Leave the devil to the deep blue sea!
I'm not saying it's now or never
But it's somewhere in between
I believe there's something better
I believe in you and me!
Come on, come on now
Come on and go with me!
Come on, come on now
Leave the devil to the deep blue sea!
Come on, come on!
The song "Come On" by Kim Richey is about leaving behind a town that has nothing to offer and taking a chance on something better. The lyrics suggest that the main character feels trapped in their current situation, with limited choices and a sense of hopelessness. They want to leave this old town behind and start fresh somewhere else. It's an anthem of determination and willingness to take a risk for a better life.
The lyrics paint a picture of a tired old town that's "busy dying," seemingly without any hope for the future. The character wants to escape that negative energy and seek out a brighter future with someone they care about. The verse "We'll see what tomorrow brings" suggests a sense of adventure and uncertainty, but also a willingness to go on this journey together. Though the character is unsure of what's to come, they have faith that they can create something better for themselves.
Overall, the lyrics of "Come On" are empowering and inspiring. The song encourages listeners to take control of their lives and pursue their dreams, despite any obstacles that may be in their way. It's a reminder that sometimes taking a chance on something new is the only way to move forward.

I love this song, and the performer--Kim Richey. What beautiful sentiments. And a great rockin' beat. Leave the devil to the deep blue sea. It's simple: Do what makes you happy, and bring your lover along.
