The Abyss
Kim Taylor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Darkness is always around me
Darkness is nothing to fear
I walk alone by the ocean and it′s just the stars and me out here
Just the stars and me out here

I'm driving fast down a back road
Shaped like a poisonous snake
There are winners and losers and those
Who keep making the same goddamn mistake
The same goddamn mistake

So we jump off
Hope we don′t miss
Nobody's paying no mind
Go and jump off
To the abyss
Nobody's watching this time
Nobody′s-

There′s nothing like wind through a tall pine tree
Howling and shaking its arms at me
And I'm still a kid way down deep inside
I am insecure full of youthful pride
I am insecure full of youthful pride

So we jump off
Hope we don′t miss
Nobody's paying no mind
Go and jump off
To the abyss
Nobody′s watching this time
Nobody's

So we jump off
Hope we don′t miss
Nobody's paying no mind
Go and jump off
Into the abyss
Nobody's watching this time

So we jump off
Hope we don′t miss
Nobody′s paying no mind
Go and jump off
To the abyss
Nobody's watching this time

Darkness is always around me
Darkness is nothing to fear

I walk alone by the ocean and it′s just the stars and me out here
Just the stars and me out here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kim Taylor's song "The Abyss" reflect on the uncertainty and fear that come with taking risks, jumping into the unknown, and potentially failing. The singer acknowledges that darkness is always around her, but that darkness should not be feared. She walks alone by the ocean, with the stars as her only companions, suggesting that she prefers solitude over being with others who might hold her back or cloud her judgment. She then shifts to a fast drive down a back road, where the road's shape resembles a venomous snake, with winners and losers who keep making the same mistakes.

The chorus talks about taking a leap of faith, metaphorically jumping off into the abyss, and hoping not to miss. The singer acknowledges that nobody is paying attention or watching this time, implying that this might be a good opportunity for her to take a chance. In the verse after the chorus, she describes the exhilarating feeling of wind through a tall pine tree, and how it brings out the kid in her, full of youthful pride and insecurity. She then repeats the chorus, emphasizing the message that sometimes we have to take risks, no matter how scary the unknown may be.

Overall, the song conveys a message of courage and fearlessness, of embracing the darkness that surrounds us, and taking action despite the risks. The song suggests that sometimes, we need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, and to trust our gut to lead us to where we need to be.
