Remember when we used to be so close
But now who knows
I can't believe that I could be
So unaware of your vindictive ways
The games you play
When you were doin' my man
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
After all that we've been through
You turned on me, I don't need you
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
What they're sayin' must be true
You turned on me, I don't need you
I was there when you were down
I let you in, I gave you all I had
Wish I could take it back
Now I see, what you're about
You run your mouth
All you care about's yourself
You're somethin' else
You violated all the trust we had
With all the lies that you spread
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
After all that we've been through
You turned on me, I don't need you
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
What they're sayin' must be true
You turned on me, I don't need you
Get a life, you're outta line
'cause all you do is live through mine
Got a little too much time on your hands
I never thought that it would get to be this way
You can't even look me in my face
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
After all that we've been through
You turned on me, I don't need you
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
What they're sayin' must be true
You turned on me, I don't need you
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
After all that we've been through
You turned on me, I don't need you
Who needs an enemy
When I've got a friend like you?
What they're sayin' must be true
You turned on me, I don't need you
"Friend Like You" by Kimberley Locke is a song about a friendship that turned sour. The lyrics speak of looking back at a past when the two friends were once close, but now it seems that there is nothing left between them. The singer is hurt as she realizes that she should have been more aware of her friend's malicious ways, the games she played, and the lies she spread. The chorus repeats the phrase "Who needs an enemy when I've got a friend like you?" which suggests that the friend has been more harmful than a foe. The singer acknowledges that the trust between them has been violated irreparably, and it would be better to end the friendship than to prolong the agony.
The song's bridge warns the friend to "get a life" and that she is "outta line" because she has been living through the singer's life. She notes that the friend talks behind her back and only seems to care about herself. The singer is disappointed and hurt that it has come to this, revealing that she didn't think it would ever happen to them. The song ends with the chorus repeating the "Who needs an enemy" line, emphasizing the message that sometimes friends can be more harmful than enemies.
Overall, the song speaks to the experience of having a close friendship go wrong. It touches on the themes of betrayal, hurt, and the importance of trust in a healthy friendship.
