Early public performances by Kimbra included singing at JBC (now the dive bar Nivara Lounge) in Hamilton at age 9, the Waikato Times Gold Cup race meeting in 2000 as a 10-year-old, and singing the national anthem at age 12 before 27,000 people at the Auckland vs Waikato NPC rugby final. In 2007, after winning the Juice TV award for best breakthrough music video for her second single "Simply on My Lips", she came to the attention of ex-Independient Records boss Mark Richardson (Jamiroquai, Paula Abdul) and his newly-formed management company and independent label Forum 5 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Before her debut album, Kimbra released 2 singles: 'Simply On My Lips' and 'Deep For You'.
Kimbra's debut album, Vows was released in 2011. Three singles have been released from this album - 'Cameo Lover', 'Settle Down', 'Good Intent'. According to the Settle Down Songfacts, Vows spans five years of Kimbra's life from age 17 to 22. and explores love, identity and coming of age.
Kimbra also collaborated with Australian artist Gotye for the single 'Somebody That I Used To Know ' in 2011. This song has peaked on the charts in The USA, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and The Netherlands at #1.
A significantly reworked version of her debut album was released in the U.S. in May of 2012. At the end of that year Kimbra triumphed in five categories at the New Zealand Music Awards, most notably Best Female Solo Artist and Best Pop Album. She also continued to receive plaudits for her Gotye collaboration well into 2013, among them the 2012 Grammy for Record of the Year.
Along with touring with Gotye and making festival appearances, including a spot at Brazil's Rock in Rio festival, Kimbra began work on her second album, The Golden Echo. She returned to the studio with producer Rich Costey and a host of collaborators including Bilal, Van Dyke Parks, Muse's Matt Bellamy, the Mars Volta's Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez, and Silverchair's Daniel Johns, who co-wrote some of the album's songs. Singles such as the genre-hopping "'90s Music" and the smooth disco-funk homage "Miracle" hinted at The Golden Echo's eclecticism ahead of its August 2014 release.
Kimbra reunited with Bilal in 2015, appearing on his album In Another Life, and debuted her own single "Sweet Relief" in 2016. The 2017 single "Everybody Knows" offered the first taste of her third album Primal Heart. Featuring songs co-written and co-produced by Kimbra -- as well as collaborations with John Congleton and Skrillex -- Primal Heart appeared in April 2018.
Call Me

I see you hurrying to get somewhere
Stop and smell the roses
Stop, get closer feel it in the air
(Yeah you)
Can I hold out my hand?
Make you listen to me, help you understand
Why you make me high
Won't you slow down I
Just need a moment of your time
It's electric baby
I could be the one or I could be just crazy
(I know you've been hurt before)
I can tell it in the way you're wanting more
I know the game you're playing
I wanna break the rules, stop your questioning
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down (Come bring your love around me)
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down (Come bring your trust around me)
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down (I won't let you stay lonely)
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
(Come bring your love)
When will we talk on a Saturday?
You're always hurrying to get somewhere
Striking all your poses
You think I don't notice that you're everywhere?
Yeah you
Can I hold out my hand?
Make you mine forever, all the money I could spend
Looking out for you
Let me take you out where you want to
(I'm gonna hold you I got nothing to lose tonight I'm all tight)
I wanna let go with you
Wait for a moment alone with you
(See that golden light
That shines each time we walk by?)
It's electric baby
Come and take a chance on all the dreams you're dreaming
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down (Come bring your love around me)
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down (Come bring your trust around me)
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down (I won't let you stay lonely)
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
(Come bring your love)
Nobody understands
I got love but I ain't got plans
You make me high
Can I tell you all the reasons why?
The night is nigh and it's coming fast
Feel like little kids at school skipping class
Come break the law with me
Listen to me, I'm the one you're really waiting for
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Nothing's gonna bring us down
Call me
Nothing's gonna bring us down
(Come bring your love)
I got what you want, baby don't move, when they move along
Get tight, get it tough, everyone's fighting for the one they want
I got what you need, baby don't move, when they come for me
Get tight, get it tough, everyone's fighting for the one they want
I got what you want, baby don't move, when they move along
Get tight, get it tough, everyone's fighting for the one they want
The lyrics of Kimbra's song "Call Me" are about a person who wants to connect with someone else who is always in a rush and doesn't have time for love. The song's chorus is a plea to call her and to trust her, promising to neither disappoint the person nor let them be alone. The singer is offering to break the rules and take risks, but is asking for the chance to show her love and dedication. The second verse expresses the desperation of the singer and how she is willing to forget about all obligations and focus on love.
In the chorus, Kimbra repeatedly sings "Nothing's gonna bring us down" reflecting the strength and resilience of the relationship she is begging for, and how nothing and nobody will be able to stand in the way of their love. The phrase "It's electric baby" describes the intense chemistry between the two people and how they can't help but be drawn to each other. The song closes with a repetition of the chorus and the mention of fighting for the person they want.
Overall, "Call Me" is a passionate, upbeat song about the desire for connection and love, and the willingness to take risks to achieve it.

Kimbra's voice and style are amazing! I love how her music is a mix of different genres. She reminds me of Corinne Bailey Rae.
