All recordings were made with session musicians (with Carter singing lead) for his own production company Sunny Records and the records were leased to Larry Page's Penny Farthing Records. In 1973 the single "Dreams Are Ten a Penny" came out and a singer called John Knowles was sent out to promote the record as "Kincade". The song wasn't a hit in the UK, but got to number 2 in Germany and number 5 in Sweden. Carter: "Larry kept saying 'an album, another single' and he found this group". This group was Octopus, for after a disagreement John Knowles was replaced by Paul & Nigel Griggs and Rick Williams, who were part of a band called Octopus that had been signed to Penny Farthing Records. They were now sent off to promote Kincade records, although neither they nor John Knowles had taken part in any of the recordings. This caused much confusion especially when John Knowles re-emerged as John Kincade for a solo career.
Following the success of "Dreams Are Ten a Penny", Kincade scored a few minor hits in Germany in 1973 and 1974, including "Do You Remember Marilyn", "Big Hand for Annie" and "How Can I Fly". In the meantime Carter was already busy with his new project, First Class, who would have a huge hit with Beach Baby in the summer of 1974.

Dreams Are Ten A Penny
Kincade Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And we pretended whenever times were hard
We built a house up in a tree
And dreamed of how our lives would be
But now the tree has died
So gotta say to you
Leave them in the lost and found
Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny
Get your feet back on the ground
You dreamed of heroes riding across the sea
In shining armor but all you had was me
All the time you never knew
All I could do was dream of you
And still I do today
So gotta say to you
Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny
Leave them in the lost and found
Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny
Get your feet back on the ground
Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny
Leave them in the lost and found
Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny
Get your feet back on the ground
The song "Dreams Are Ten A Penny" by Kincade is about two childhood friends, Jenny and the singer, who used to play together in a treehouse in Jenny's backyard. They used to dream of how their lives would be, but now that they are grown up, those dreams have faded away. The lyrics suggest that Jenny has continued to dream of unrealistic things, such as heroes riding across the sea in shining armor, while the singer has recognized that dreams alone are not enough and that it is important to be grounded in reality.
The chorus, "Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny, leave them in the lost and found, Jenny, Jenny, dreams are ten a penny, get your feet back on the ground," reinforces the idea that dreaming alone won't change anything and that it's important to take action and work towards achieving one's goals.
The song also touches on unrequited love as the singer reveals they had always dreamed of Jenny, but she never realized it. The line, "All the time you never knew, all I could do was dream of you, and still I do today," further emphasizes this.
