This guy's "low hours" on a single engine saved their lives because he had a basic understanding of aviation and aviation terms, and he knew what it was like to land a flying machine. His focus and ability to collect himself as well as the excellent guidance and support that he received from the ground also played a huge role.
This documentary had me on the edge of my seat the whole time until the plane touched down safely. Really well done !

He had a very deep sense of the gravity of the situation, but also knew that there was nothing to be gained from not doing his best to triumph over it. He did his best, and God helping, it was enough. I know I would have responded the same way he did, and I hope with the same outcome (though I'm not certain of it.) I have a solid basic understanding of flight controls and airplane physics, though I've never flown a real plane. Experience is the best teacher; he had little, and I have none, but the truth is that if you have God on your side, some good people helping you, and the determination to triumph, it's amazing what you can do.

I would have to just do it flying in this size for me to get back on a plane...HAD TO! & my father has an 8 person private jet but he knows he has to LAND A PLANE!!! Much respect to your grandson! Oh this just made me never ever want to get back on my dad‘s company private 12 person plane. I get terrified before landing and take off in these smaller jets!! We had a crash landing two years ago at our smallllll little airport in Tupelo MS they landed in a big field it was either land it or die it was a husband and wife and their daughter and his son-in-law on that jet I had been on MANY TIMES it was baseball season and this family was leaving for Omaha Nebraska for the championship! It was one of their coaches at the University of Mississippi, Ole Miss... my boyfriend is also a pilot but for a hobby. Makes me feel better always when he fly’s with me.

I’ve heard this recording numerous times yet every time I hear it, it still makes me anxious as hell. I know for fact, majority of people would have choked and panicked in his position. Yet he kept it together and stayed strong through the whole thing. Absolutely amazing... his family, especially his wife and two daughters, must be so proud of him.

Thank you for not having commercials turned on. This video needs to watched without interruption. You can definitely hear him holding back tears on his last transmit. What got me was hearing the original pilot speaking his last words. He literally died while speaking to ATC.

Traveling home after his brother’s funeral, a deceased pilot, limited flight experience and your wife and daughters right behind you as you struggle to safely bring the aircraft down safely. What an amazing job! Doug’s standard phraseology on the radio was impressive and I could tell as Doug got more relaxed, the phraseology came back to him. How very lucky that you were in the right seat with Joe sharing some knowledge on radio use. Divine intervention indeed. Sounds like it was Joe’s time, unfortunately, and this was the trigger to get you back on the flight deck to help others. Inspiring story! Oh yeah, and geaux Tigers!

Yep. He later said that at the time of this incident he had probably 30-35 hours in a C-172 in the previous 6 months or so but that his instructor really hammered home communication and radio skills, sometimes even above flying skills, at that point.
Maybe the instructor had a premonition.

I know that when you pull back on the yoke the plane goes up and when you push it forward the plane goes down. There is a throttle control for making it go faster or slower. There is an altitude control too. Also a button to put the wheels down. and a flap control. Now just give me a radio so I can talk to an expert.

I got chills all throughout this video. It felt like I was in the plane the whole time. Incredible editing!! I was an avionics installer for several years at Raytheon Aircraft Services at FLL working mostly on Beechcraft and Kingairs so I’m pretty familiar with the instrument panel layout here, but I don’t have actual yoke time. I really don’t know how I would’ve done in this same situation, but knowing how to work the radios and communicate with the tower is truly THE lifeline. The tower did an amazing job getting all surrounding aircraft out of this guy’s way. It’s their job and they did it flawlessly. This is one of the best aviation videos I’ve ever watched.

I could sense what Doug was experiencing flying that King Aire with just a little Cessna time. It's a big change of plane under an extreme amount of pressure. My hat is off to you sir. Well done.

It was brought out later that the NTSB had sent a crash plane that was enroute to the Ft. Myers area and they turned them around in mid air.
First time they had ever done that.

What an astoundingly amazing video. The only thing left to the imagination here is the sheer amount of emotions sweeping through Doug and his family (especially when they landed). Major props to ATC for having every wit needed to handle the mayday properly, not overinforming, remining calm, and getting all the help they could while moving everything else out of Doug's path. This is a true display of the unfathomable strength of people when they help each other. 10/10 best 43 mins spent. The recreation through the simulator was absolute genius and all well-timed and calibrated matching every detail of what was going on with the plane during this time. Thank you. It definitely warmed my heart up.

What saved him was he had prior flying time. I have 800hrs in SEL single engine land and 6hrs helicopter time. Landing is where we spend 80% of our time. Everything else is simple. Cross country today with GPS and ground tracking is easy. Flying a constant speed prop is a little tricky. You can change the angle of the prop for more/less bite out of the air better efficiency at higher altitudes. He did awsome. My first solo. I greased the landing so smooth Couldn’t believe it. Same when I had a EMERGENCY LANDING bird strike and cracked windshield. Made a short approach and that landing was spot on.

The will to survive using your minimal experience kicks in, like the 80 yr old who flew and landed her dead husband's plane while he was beside her. The will of survival and take care of your loved ones is very strong. I didn't realise there was so much turning involved to line up a plane for landing. As a former Crash and Fire Rescue Air Field Firefighter, this just blessed my heart. I have seen so many plane crashes and I have often been part of the grizzly clean up. The worst being a King Air that lost altitude at the end of the runway, plowed into the trees and crashed and burned. It feels so good to see that this mans experience and ability to set aside his fears and focus like a laser beam not only saved himself but the lives of the two passengers. If you're going to be a pilot, you cannot ever give up. Even if everything is in utter chaos you fly the plane and I believe the pilot said it best. He asked God for help. Nothing wrong with that. What an amazing video. Thanks for posting. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Condolences to the family of the pilot who passed away. I bet when the Colonel passed away that pilot met him at heavens gate.

I read where the NTSB had already dispatched a 'crash scene' plane out of Atlanta (?) enroute to the Ft. Myers area to work the upcoming crash.
Half way there, after the King Air landed at Ft. Myers, NTSB turned them around.
First time in history they have ever done that, the article said.

Oh my gosh, what an experience! It felt like I was in that cockpit... I shed tears watching this. What a sensational job!!!! Unbelievable self-control and determination. You definitely need nerves of steel to do that. Amazing teamwork with the controllers - absolute professionals! I loved how they çommended Doug through the entire phase. Having people with such composure is what you need, and this ordeal proved just that from beginning to end! It was by God's grace that Doug chose to take up the seat in the cockpit and the fact that he had some basic sense of flying was the miracle in this story. Praise God 🙏

Having the flight recorded and shown on YouTube is surreal for Doug, the hero who can now relive the nightmare again and again. And noticeably, we never heard from the wife and children who were there at the back, too shocked to talk. They all could have fainted understandly. I've never been in a situation as dire as this but I do know one thing. As a father, when anything threatens your family, there is a switch in your brain that flips emotion off and you just do what you have to do. You want to keep them calm so you try to sound casual despite how you feel inside. This man is a true father.

@Better than yours I’m sure you’re part right; but as a mom who is a former combat veteran, I do think it’s a little different after I had kids. Before….well yes. After….I think us moms actually turn the emotion ON…it’s our primal scream and fighting spirit that gets turned up when our kids are in danger and it isn’t necessarily the best for a situation like this, not that we can’t do it, especially for our kids.

He said later that at this time he had 30-35 hours in the past 6 months or so in a C-172, and that his primary instructor really focused in on and hammered him in radio communication skills.

I am glad that man continued flying. He maintained his cool beautifully throughout that emergency when many would not have. He did a great job landing an unfamiliar aircraft. In my opinion, he has what it takes to be an excellent pilot.

Wow amazing story and video. Wasn't expecting to watch all this but definitely glad I did. Going to ATC school in the Navy and knowing basic controls on certain aircraft I salute Doug 🙏💪👍 for maintaining calm and doing everything needed to save his family. I would had been scared AF up there. Hats off to the controllers as well. Especially Lisa she calm me when she was assisting and I got nervous again when she had to pass Doug to approach. Beautiful story!!!!!!!!

Good luck on your schooling! I just got out of the Navy a couple weeks ago after 8 years in. AC was considered to be one of the hardest schools when I was in Pensacola back in 2015 (I was an I-level AT my whole career.)

Lisa did a phenomenal job on the radio. Talking up the guy, making him feel more comfortable in the situation. Dude has flown things before and since she knew that she wanted to go back to the basics that everyone whose ever piloted something understands and kept him calm during the process. Big ups to her!

I was truly impressed with her demeanor with him in the pilot's seat ; enclosed with his friend in a tiny pilot's cabin . She knew what she knew and shared her knowledge and expertise on the
"King " . I had a mentor who was more then willing to share her wealth of knowledge to those who were willing to listen . My mind became like a sponge to her every word and I was proud to work with and beside her . She was beyond any of us even today as she
serves human kindness in her lifestyle .

This guy sounds a lot like a friend of mine, who is also ironically named Doug. Thank you for this recreation. This is such a touching documentary recreation. The stress is so real. I know any real man would have attempted what he did, but not all would succeed. I would have attempted it, but I'm not sure I would have succeeded. He wasn't sure he would succeed. God gave him peace, and a lot of good people around him, and the wisdom to put it all together. Thank you for making this moving tribute to everyone involved.

Amazing work by all parties. I've dealt with several emergencies and nothing is more useful than a good air traffic controller. I remember listening to the audio, but this video adds another dimension. Great job. I don't think anything else needs to be said about Doug. He's a hero.

That was amazing. Lisa and others were amazing and calm through the whole idea. Good job to Doug for getting her down and remaining cool under pressure. His emotion was apparent after landing with the stakes so high. Great job by ATC as well to fend off traffic and clear the comms for Doug.

He said later that after the incident he had to make a decision. Either get back on the horse that threw him, or never get back on again. He chose to get back on the horse and later learned how to fly the King Air on his own.

My grand father, father, uncles and my brother are private pilots. My brother can fly a king air and is instrument rated. Daddy flew Mom and my 3 siblings from NWFL to Ft. Myers in a tiny 4 seater craft when I was 6 weeks old to meet my Aunt and uncle. I just turned 50. This video hit in a different kind of way!! So very thankful to God for getting this family on the ground!! This Daddy did a beautiful job!!

My god, that man is a machine to stay that calm. Having just recently lost his brother and then his pilot dying, leaving him alone in an unfamiliar aircraft with his family on board, you'd think he'd fall to pieces. But he stayed cool as a cucumber right up until the end, when only then, you could finally hear the emotion coming through as his voiced cracked. Hats off to you sir you are a true hero.

So Pete, in a situation like that, what choices do you have?. You could panic, and doom everybody on the plane, or you could keep your shit together, even though your arse is clenched so tight you cant get off the seat, and hopefully survive. What most people do, is do their best. Falling to pieces when faced with a situation like that is not a survival trait. Heroes are most often normal guys that keep their shit together in abnormal situations.

Reminds me of an article in a Reader’s Digest quite some years ago where a guy flying a single engine plane had a heart attack and his wife with no flying experience took over.
They were in a reasonably remote location so there wasn’t the same resources depicted here.
However it just happened that the control tower of the nearest runway was staffed by a pilot instructor who was able to talk her down safely!

Every time I watch this I get goosebumps when I hear his voice break when he says “We’re down buddy” and asks where to taxi. He and the Good Lord were helped by an whole unseen host of people at ATC. Everyone kept their cool; I can’t fathom the level of stress for all involved. I’m so glad that everyone kept calm and helped this man to save the lives of his family. RIP to the pilot who passed away.

My goodness I’m only ever been a passenger , I felt like I was there , my stomach in my mouth , I felt sick and frightened , if my whole family had been with me I don’t know what I would have done ,

WOW!!! WOW!!! What a story and great work on the video syncing everything together with the Flight Sim. It was sad about the pilot but it was such a "hoot" how Doug W. stepped right up to bat and took over, even to the point of getting a bit comfortable and a little cocky. AND!!!! He even taxied off of the runway. I got such a laugh out of this then a lot of tears at the end. Happy tears. What an amazing young man. What happened to him that day could not have happened to a better man. Most men would have walked away and would never have flown again but he took his experience and turned it into an amazing career helping thousands. I wish I wasn't 70 years old and could see what ever became of Doug W. 50 years in the future. Thank you FS MaNiA. BTW, WTF is an FS MaNiA?

Pilots are taught at the very beginning to aviate (fly the plane) navigate (know where you are going) and communicate (relay your intentions to ATC) in that order. He did just that.

Doug was a far better pilot than they initially gave him credit for.
It puts me in mind of one of Jeff Cooper's maxims;
"A man fights with his mind.
All else is secondary."

He kept his wits about him, and he saved himself and his family, with a little help from the ATC professionals, and an instructor thousands of miles away.

Wow, hands down one of the best YouTube videos I've ever seen. I backed up and re-watched segments many times. As a single engine VFR-only pilot myself who hasn't flown in 25 years, this hits home. Knowing his family was in the back and when his voice cracked at the end, it got me choked up for sure.
