This song popped into my head this morning, and I instantly started crying.

The lyrics that really get me emotional are:

I lost my mom to dementia back in January, and these lyrics make me think of her.

Once you lose such an important person in your life, your life is never the same ever again. The heartache, missing the person and sadness never ever truly go away. You just kind of have to try to go on in your life without them, but it is never easy.

Do you really think that? There were also many in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s (including Carole King). The difference is that they learned to play classical music on an instrument. They did not simply write some lyrics and program a keyboard, and find a producer to clean up the mess, which is what they do now.

1971, married at 16, and him 17. Lived in a travel trailer near Fort Brag. Dancing in that little home for two. Laughing and playing constantly..... but that's what teenagers do, right? This song takes me back that place where we laughed and loved.

We had three beautiful children and seven grandchildren. We divorced and cancer took my first love in 2000.

My best friend passed away from breast cancer in October. I hear this song and it brings me to tears and feelings of despair. I miss her soooo bad sometimes. Monica was so full of life, she fought the cancer so strongly right to the end.

This song brings me to a place that I was. It was around 1979, in Morristown N.J.. The smell of winter was in the air. I remember where I stood and how I felt. Music is amazing to be able to transport you to somewhere in the past.

Love this album. Still gives me goose pimples. Takes me back to my teenage years. Met my now husband at 14 years old. We laughed all the time. Married when we were ready years later. Two lads and many years and still loving, laughing and playing tapestry. What more can you want.

I'm 9K miles "far and away" from my first love and we've been married for 35 years. She's a volunteer OB/Gyn Doctor at an African Hospital and I'm here in COVID covered America trying to raise funds so she can continue to save women and children lives. The feels I’m getting from listening to this song is overwhelming. I’m really taken aback by this. Gripping sorrow, remembering my childhood and how awesome it was. And now all these family members are deceased and I’ll never see them again. I miss them all so much. My parents, grandparents, Aunts and Uncles. I wasn’t prepared for this at all.

It may be the most perfect album of all time. While there are others I may enjoy more (The brothers at Fillmore East) this is so perfect. Each song is perfect, the order of the songs is perfect. It is just perfect. Simply amazing. And to think she wrote hundreds of other great songs. I loved watching President Obama giving her the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

It’s amazing how much music can influence you, help you thru hard times, I love how many different ways this song can be interpreted.

My sister passed away when she was 8, before she passed she was schooling at the National Deaf Academy in Florida, I live in PA.

This song helped me cope with my sister moving to Florida & away from our family so she could learn to communicate better so at one point it just resonated with me that she was so far away, but only by miles.

Since she’s passed, she’s still so far away, but now it’s a time’s away before I see her again. 💜🤟🏼

Sorry for your loss. Its definitely a particular pain that certain songs can bring about. I was the same when I lost my Father. I could go on, smile when need be, and move through the motions - and then I'd hear anything from any rock band I grew up on (such as Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Old Genesis, Old Journey, well...basically anything and everything from the 60s on!) - and it was like taking a bullet. I could actually be at a store or at a gathering and for a minute or two forget and then BAM! A song would play and I was instantly brought back to my pain and knowing I could never again see him enjoying the music with me. For close to a year I couldn't listen to much at all. I drove without the radio even on in my car because I didn't want to take the chance of hearing something I didn't want to hear. That was 18 years ago now and it has gotten less painful, but it's still there. I jam Zeppelin now and still feel pain for what I won't have with him again, but I do atleast now smile - knowing I was lucky to have had him at all and have those memories. ❤

I'm so sorry for your loss and the pain it brings. There's no quick fix when everything gets broken, my friend, but maybe try talking to people who knew your wife well: mutual friends, other family members, her work colleagues, etc, rather than keeping everything inside. If this isn't possible, seek out a bereavement counsellor near you and sign up for some sessions. This can often be a great help when the feelings of loss are so raw. You don't say if you had children together - if you did, recognise that your wife lives on in them, and you will continue to see and hear her in the way they tilt their heads or sneeze or laugh or sing or carry out a particular task. If you don't have children, it might be worth getting involved in something that relates in some way to your wife's death: if she died due to a particular disease/illness, try raising funds for a relevant charity that increases public awareness/funds research into treatments, cures, etc. If her death was due to an accident, get involved in a campaign that seeks to promote awareness. If one doesn't exist, start one. Find others who've experienced similar losses and draw strength from them. At the time I'm writing this it will be a year or so since you lost your wife, and you could use your experience to help others who've had a more recent loss.
Most of all, focus on the 20 years that you and your wife had together rather than dwelling on her absence in the present, and value the things you did together.
The poet, Philip Larkin, once wrote a poem ('An Arundel Tomb', if you want to look it up) that ends with the line 'What will survive of us is love.' As I've aged and lost people close to me, I've come to realise the truth of that: you are shaped by the love of those who loved you, and your love for others shapes them. Your wife's love for you has helped shape you as a human being, so in a profound sense, she survives in you, too. Without her love you would not be who you are, so in a sense you and she are still one. I hope that a year on you're beginning to see some chinks of light in your darkness. If not, don't worry - they will come eventually. All good wishes.

I lost my husband in 2019 to pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer and this song makes me think of him and how much I miss him and just want to hold him again. When I was around him I felt like all my problems would just disappear. Since then I've been stuck in a depressive burned out rut. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get out of it. I also understand that there's worse places I could be in right now so I'm happy for that.

I was 16 when I first heard this song. It was in a Japanese car commercial and I was an exchange student in Nagoya Japan for the summer. Bird eyes view of a car winding through a mountain pass. The song introduced to me the life lesson of how transient relationships can be and to cherish what and when you have something special. Thank you, CL.
