So far away
King Carole Lyrics

So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
It doesn't help to know you're just time away
Long ago, I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again could only do me good
How I wish I could, but you're so far away
One more song about movin' along the highway
Can't say much of anything that's new
If I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it bein' close to you

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
It doesn't help to know you're so far away
Yeah, you're so far away

Travelin' around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothin' else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don't come to own me
There's so many dreams I've yet to find

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're so far away

Yeah, you're so far away
Yeah, you're so far away

Overall Meaning

King Carole's "So Far Away" is a heartfelt lament about the loneliness that comes with being separated from a loved one. The song presents a universal feeling that anyone who has been away from their loved ones for a long period can relate to. The song opens with the question, "Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?" suggesting that people move around so much that it's hard to keep up with their whereabouts. The singer wishes to see their lover's face at their doorstep, but the distance between them is overwhelming.

In the second verse, the singer sings about how they would rather be close to their lover than travel on the highway. They express their longing to work out their life in a way that enables them to spend more time with their loved one. The final verse emphasizes how lonely and demoralizing it can be to travel constantly, with no respite from the isolation. The singer hopes that the road does not absorb them, leaving behind nothing but unfinished dreams.

Overall, "So Far Away" is a poignant reflection on the universal experience of missing someone. It captures the feeling of emptiness that comes with being so far away from those who mean everything to us.

This song popped into my head this morning, and I instantly started crying.

The lyrics that really get me emotional are:
Long ago I reached for you
And there you stood
Holding you again
Could only do me good
How I wish I could
But you're so far away.

I lost my mom to dementia back in January, and these lyrics make me think of her.

Once you lose such an important person in your life, your life is never the same ever again. The heartache, missing the person and sadness never ever truly go away. You just kind of have to try to go on in your life without them, but it is never easy.

RIP, mom! I will never stop loving or missing you.

My wife and I were going through a difficult time. I was going to leave her. We told our kids and they were upset. Next day I got home after work and she played this song. I realized then how much I loved her and how much she loved me. That was 24 years ago. We've now been married for 44 years. This song saved my life.
