In The Wake Of Poseidon/Libra's Theme
King Crimson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Plato's spawn cold ivied eyes
Snare truth in bone and globe.
Harlequins coin pointless games
Sneer jokes in parrot's robe.
Two women weep, Dame Scarlet Screen
Sheds sudden theater rain,
Whilst dark in dream the Midnight Queen
Knows every human pain.

In air, fire, earth and water
World on the scales.
Air, fire, earth and water
Balance of change
World on the scales
On the scales.

Bishop's kings spin judgment's blade
Scratch "Faith" on nameless graves.
Harvest hags Hoard ash and sand
Rack rope and chain for slaves
Who fireside fear fermented words
Then rear to spoil the feast,
Whilst in the aisle the mad man smiles
To him it matters least.

Heroes hands drain stones for blood
To whet the scaling knife.
Magi blind with visions light
Net death in dread of life.
Their children kneel in Jesus till
They learn the price of nail,

Whilst all around our mother earth
Waits balanced on the scales.

Overall Meaning

The song "In the Wake of Poseidon Including Libra's Theme" by King Crimson begins with the lines, "Plato's spawn cold ivied eyes, snare truth in bone and globe," which seems to be a reference to how people in power use their intellect, or spawn of Plato's philosophy, to manipulate the truth and control the world. The next line, "Harlequins coin pointless games, sneer jokes in parrot's robe," suggests that the people who are supposed to entertain us, or Harlequins and parrots, are also being used to distract us with pointless games and jokes.

Then, the song goes on to describe two women weeping, presumably as a result of some tragedy that is portrayed on Dame Scarlet Screen, which sheds sudden theater rain. Meanwhile, the Midnight Queen, who represents darkness and mystery, is aware of every human pain. The lines "In air, fire, earth, and water, world on the scales, balance of change" suggest that everything in the world is constantly shifting, and we are all trying to find equilibrium.

The rest of the song speaks of people in power, like bishops and kings, using their positions to judge and control others, as well as the masses being in fear and ultimately being used as slaves. The song also references the children of the Magi being forced to learn the price of the nails used to crucify Jesus, implying that even religion and spiritual beliefs are used to control and manipulate.

Overall, the song seems to be a critique of those in power who use their intelligence and influence to manipulate and control others, while also exploring the idea of balance and finding equilibrium in a constantly shifting world.

People complain that this is another "Epitaph" but why would someone complain about having another amazing song?

@tenzinsmith7991

Honestly. Sure they’re similar, but they do have differences and each is amazing in its own way. Few other songs make me feel the same way as these do, and the fact we have two of them rather than just one is a blessing in my opinion.

@vistea1

Personally, I feel Epitaph's lyrics speak to me more, but In the Wake of Poseidon has a melody and a beat that affects me in a way, very few songs have.

@kingcrimson2168

This album is like “in the court of the crimson king’s” younger sibling. Similar, yet not totally the same.

@darkdemigod

the background singing is more reminiscent of the title track of their debut anyway.

@wispycirrus9907

I like itwop better than Epitaph purely because the chorus is amazing

@vistea1

So, imagine my shock and disbelief when I saw King Crimson pop up on the FlyLo station in GTA5.

@Skatterblaster5000

Ayyeee that’s why I showed up here too

@xarzi97

Yes. I was waiting in gta lobby for a job to strt and this song started playing. I freezed up and was like what is this song, it’s so beautiful!!

@digitalcamaro9708

Bro I was flying to a bunker or something in my helicopter and was listening to FlyLo as usual, but was aware of the new music. I, somehow in my years of listening to classics/oldies, completely skipped over King Crimson (I'm a jojo fan too so that's a serious fail). I hear this in FLYLO of all stations and I'm like "This is..... beautiful". And here I am. My god I'm glad I found this.
