Arrival
King Diamond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"That must be it"

Through the summer rain of 1845
The coach had finally arrived
To the valley where the crossroads meet below
And where all darkness seems to grow
People blame it on the Hill
The hill where no one dares to go
The Mansion

The coach had stopped and from the window you could see
Seven horsemen in the night
Miriam Natias and Jonathan LaFey
Saw the magic in their eyes
They were in for a surprise
The darkness would soon be complete
A horseman came forth from the dark

"We know you've come to inherit what's your's, the mansion
Take our advise and go back on this night
If you refuse eighteen will become nine, oh no"
Oh eighteen is nine

Jonathan laughed and said "get out of my way"
"I don't believe a word You say"
The seven horsemen disappeared into the night
And said "someday you'll need our help my friend"

I think poor Jonathan was scared

Eighteen is actually nine, it stuck in his mind

Overall Meaning

The song "Arrival" by King Diamond is a story about a coach arriving at a valley where all darkness seems to grow. People blame it on the Hill, where no one dares to go - the Mansion. From the window, seven horsemen can be seen, and the people inside the coach, Miriam Natias and Jonathan LaFey saw the magic in their eyes. They were surprised, knowing that the darkness would soon be complete. A horseman came forth from the dark and said that they knew they had come to inherit what's theirs - the Mansion. He advised them to go back on that night, and if they refused, eighteen would become nine. Jonathan laughed and refused to believe any word the horseman said. The seven horsemen disappeared into the night, warning him that he will need their help someday.

The lyrics of "Arrival" describe a dark and eerie atmosphere when the coach arrives at the valley. The Mansion symbolizes darkness, and the seven horsemen represent supernatural beings who warn Jonathan and Miriam. They are advised to go back on that night, but Jonathan refuses to believe the horseman's words.

(Chegada)

Deve ser isto!
Através da chuva de verão de 1845
A carruagem finalmente chegou
Ao vale onde as encruzilhadas se encontram
E onde toda a escuridão parece nascer
As pessoas culpam a Colina
A colina onde ninguém ousa ir
A Mansão...à qual ninguém ousa visitar
A carruagem parou, e da janela você pode ver
Sete cavaleiros na noite
Miriam Natias e Jonathan LaFey
Viram a magia em seus olhos
Eles ficaram surpresos
A escuridão logo estaria completa
Um cavaleiro apareceu do escuro
Nós sabemos que você veio herdar o que é seu...A Mansão
Ouça nosso conselho e volte esta noite
Se você recusar, 18 se tornará 9... Oh Não
Oh 18 é 9
Jonathan riu e disse: Saiam do meu caminho

Dale Griffim Judas Priest is dad rock with some metal, nah.

@jakubmarszaek5918

@Matthew Duncan funny how you know nothing about metal and post this shitty comment here, King, Hank and Michael are big fans of Judas Priest and there would be no Mercyful Fate without JP. Ask them what they think about this "dad rock", I'm afraid they would consider your words as some joke

@theicedevil

Not a knock on King's abilities, but it's clear that he getting some help with his falsettos from the backing female singer who the camera focuses on several times in the video. Age effects the vocal cords in men. The cartilage in the larynx get's stringier and dryer which effects the high head voice as men age. King was also a smoker before his triple bypass surgery so it's safe to assume that he lost some of his ability to sing high. It happens to all men. Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, even the great Ronnie James Dio and Lemmy Kilmister's voice was effected by age and is evident when you listen to old albums with there more current albums.

@melovestits2

@theicedevil yes, they do a great job of masking it, a far better job than bands like Dream theatre

@robertherrick6703

@c jac It really sounds like it's mostly King. I can hear the other singer (which I think is his wife but I'm not sure) low in the mix. A good example is when King sings "Where no one dares to go" at 1:44 right after singing that high note of "The Mansion". He's definitely hitting that high note then you can hear the other singer holding the note longer.

Since this is from a DVD it's fair to suspect there's some vocal fuckery going on but I saw the band during this tour and King sounded really good, almost as good as this DVD version. King also sounds really good on the various bootlegs from this tour that are floating around on YouTube.
