Since the band's inception, there have been over fifteen musicians in and out of King Diamond, with the only two mainstays being vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Andy LaRocque. In 1987 the band released their second studio release Abigail (their first concept album). Throughout the 1980s, King Diamond released a total of four studio albums. In the early 1990s, the band was put on hold when King Diamond reunited with his former outfit Mercyful Fate. After reforming King Diamond in 1994, Diamond would balance recording and touring with both Mercyful Fate and his eponymous band throughout the 90's. Since the early 2000s, King Diamond have kept recording and touring and, since 2014, the band has been composed of vocalist King Diamond, guitarist Andy LaRocque, guitarist Mike Wead, drummer Matt Thompson, and bassist Pontus Egberg.

When the mist was eaten away by the sun
Miriam grew hour by hour and
Jonathan he cried
He knew the ghost had been telling the truth
So this was 9
The pregnancy would not last overnight
A lullaby, rocking the cradle again
And then she said
"I'm having Your baby my love...love"
But it wasn't love, Oh no
She was possessed...and he knew
[SOLO: Mike]
"I will get what is rightfully mine"
[SOLO: Andy]
Speaking with different tongues
Miriam was eaten alive from inside
Again she said
"I'm having Your baby my love...love"
But it wasn't love, Oh no
She was possessed...possessed
King Diamond’s song “The Possession” tells the story of Jonathan and Miriam who fell in love, got married, and are expecting a child. One morning, Jonathan wakes up to find that his wife has grown dramatically overnight, and he realizes that the ghost who haunted him the night before, telling him that he will become a father to a devil child, was not lying. Despite his wife's sweet lullaby and words of love, he knows that she is possessed, and he is doomed to a terrible fate. Miriam begins to speak in tongues, and he realizes that she is being eaten alive from the inside.
The song delves into the dark and haunting elements of possession, as the devil's spawn grows inside Miriam, and her love for Jonathan is replaced with evil intentions. The lyrics are eerie, and the haunting melody adds to the spine-chilling horror of the story. It shows that the devil's influence can take hold of even the most innocent and pure of hearts.
