Since the band's inception, there have been over fifteen musicians in and out of King Diamond, with the only two mainstays being vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Andy LaRocque. In 1987 the band released their second studio release Abigail (their first concept album). Throughout the 1980s, King Diamond released a total of four studio albums. In the early 1990s, the band was put on hold when King Diamond reunited with his former outfit Mercyful Fate. After reforming King Diamond in 1994, Diamond would balance recording and touring with both Mercyful Fate and his eponymous band throughout the 90's. Since the early 2000s, King Diamond have kept recording and touring and, since 2014, the band has been composed of vocalist King Diamond, guitarist Andy LaRocque, guitarist Mike Wead, drummer Matt Thompson, and bassist Pontus Egberg.
The 7th Day of July 1777
King Diamond Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Count de LaFey uncovered his cheating Wife
9 months of loving and sharing
Oh it was a bastard child
How could he have been so blind
"No bastard baby
will inherit what's mine"
Another one of her affairs
So he pushed her down the stairs
to die..."No" She cried
In 1777, on the 7th Day of July
The Countess broke her neck and the
embryo came out dead
The he burned his beloved Wife
and the embryo he gave a name
"Abigail You must rest in shame" Rest in shame
SOLO: Andy
Obsessed
With a strange idea
He wanted to mummify
The girl for the future to find...and he did
SOLO: Mike.
So he pushed her down the stairs
To die..."No" She cried
In 1777, on the 7th Day of July
The lyrics to King Diamond's song "The 7th Day of July 1777" tell the story of Count de LaFey and his wife, who had been involved in multiple affairs. When the Count discovered that his wife had become pregnant with a bastard child, he became enraged and decided that the child would not inherit his possessions. In a fit of anger, he pushed his wife down the stairs, causing her to break her neck and killing the unborn child. The Count then burnt his wife's body and decided to mummify the child, giving it the name Abigail and forcing it to "rest in shame."
