I too am a Harlem, USA Native New Yorker - no matter how crazy my dysfunctional family was, one of my endearing happy memories is every night my brothers Allen and Robert and twin sister Renée (RiP 2009 💔) and I singing this song together. I think learned all the words at age 7 lol 😅 the old school way of just listening to it every night - we didn’t have a copy of it. No liner notes - just the sheer, willpower to know all the words and act it out. It was such great fun!💞💞💞💞💞💞

Years ago I was a student at Texas Southern University. Every Sunday afternoon we used to go to a club (I don’t remember the name) and they would play Moody’s Mood For Love. I’d never heard it before, but I’ve loved it since then. It brings back such happy memories.

Growing up in the ‘50s I soaked up the culture of a mysterious world of impressions, the adult world of celebrations and romance. The music that welcomed the boys home from war and the assurance that is was more than a dream when their girls would hug and kiss them was still alive and welcoming. As ailen it was to me it was as much amazing to our fathers and neighbors who worked in the factories and the farms. I get carried away as I breath my memories of a world of long ago but they are as real today as they were then.

I was lucky to catch King Pleasure, on a fleeting visit to Los Angeles in 1964, appearing in an all night jazz show on Central Avenue. He was many of the jazz greats I saw in a year in Canada and the States. This was a great time as it was possible to hear every jazz style.

When I first discovered this mighty song back in the mid-1970's, I was so captivated by it that I sang it over and over in my Datsun B210, all the way between Washington, D.C. and West Virginia. My then-girlfriend was screaming for help by the time we got outside the Washington Beltway, but I was only listening to the tune in my head. Easily the best vocal rendition of this I've ever heard.

MOODY'S MOOD FOR LOVE was recorded on February 19th, 1952 in New York City. It released was as a 78 RPM (Prestige 924) and 45 RPM (Prestige 45-924) single on January 21st, 1953. The lyrics, based on reedman James Moody's improvisational solo to Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh's classic ballad entitled I'M IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, was written by Eddie Jefferson. MOODY'S MOOD FOR LOVE was a smash hit in the R & B field for King Pleasure. The female vocalist was Blossom Dearie. The B-side is entitled EXCLAMATION BLUES, written by Pleasure.

I read that James Moody was in Europe when the King Pleasure side broke. When he came back to the States he had to get the record of his original solo in order to relearn it, because people were demanding to hear him play it, and he'd forgotten all about it.
