It's a real credit to Simmerson's stupidity that he could stand 10' away from Wellington and somehow not feel the malevolence, anger, and soldiering boiling off the general. I imagine Wellington was drawing vicious caricatures of Simmerson with his quill to stop himself from leaping over the desk and throttling the man with his own two hands.

It's often overlooked, but actors portraying villains have a difficult job. In this instance, the gentleman portraying Simmerson did excellent work. It's doubly hard to portray a man who is both a villain and a coward besides.

I really like how Wellesley keeps a calm manner for the first few minutes of Simmerson's report until he gives Major Hogans report contradicting Simmerson's report and slowly reveals his displeasure. It's not until he mentions the loss of the Kings Colours that he drops the facade entirely and revealing he already knew what really happened and you see exactly how furious he is at Simmerson's incompetence and cowardice.
Never lie to a Field Marshal, they tend to know a whole lot more than they let on.

I served in an armor battalion early in my career. One of the other lieutenants, was involved in a range incident where a machine gun raked the control tower. Nobody was hurt. That platoon leader was called before the battalion commander and asked point blank if he had authorized loading of a machine gun prior to being authorized by range control to do so. He said no. He was asked, "are you sure". He replied that he was. Then the audio tape of his intercom was played. In it, he was clearly heard authorizing the loader to load and prime the guns without authorization. That Lieutenant was promptly fired and on a plane back to the States the next day. Nobody was hurt. It was an accident and although proceedure was not followed it was a mistake and could have been learned from without destroying the career of a promising officer. Yet that officer was fired and recieved a General Letter of Reprimand basically ending his career. Why? Because he lied. In the American army lying is one of the most serious crimes. We have to trust the word of the officers in our commands. We trust them with our very lives. A dishonest officer is worthless. Worse, he is a grave risk to the life of every man in that command because a liar places themself above the unit. That is unacceptable, especially in an officer.
I always assumed that my commander had more information than me and when I commanded that was also usually true. So, I always reported as accurately as possible. Honesty is always the best policy IMO.
Besides, its usually not the crime that gets you, its the coverup.

@Mike don there’s a lot of misinformation about Wellington and how ‘Irish’ he was, primarily from Irish historians who try to claim him as an Irishman.

It’s dangerous to put stock in such things as culturally, ancestrally and in terms of his personality he was about as English as you could get; referring to himself as such in his letters. He was fond of Ireland however and definitely was a unionist. All Anglo Irish people at this time were proud unionists…it was only at the turn of the twentieth century that some of them started regarding themselves as Irish really.

However he was scheming to kick Washington out of command of the army but his capture removed a competitor for Washington's command. Tarleton ended the war in disgrace when he matched up his army against Daniel Morgan's army at the Battle of Cowpens. Tarleton fled the defeat with a fraction of his men, minus most of his command and all of his light artillery. No doubt, Simmerson and Tarleton shared the family sense of how to do battle, "that's my style, sir!".

That is the moment that Wellington knew full well that Simmerson had no idea what he was doing even if the rest of the debacle didn't - if he really was a competent mole for Wellington's enemies in Parliament, he would've ferreted out who Wellington's agents and trusted operatives were first and realized there was a reason that Hogan and Sharpe were specifically attached to the South Essex for that mission. Instead, he outs himself as the incompetent fop he was... far more incompetent than Wellington had expected given Hogan and Sharpe were originally just to make sure the mission succeeded.

@MaizeAndBlueWahoo Yep. In the books Wellesley states he only gave the South Essex the role to give them an easy first mission and potential for a minor skirmish with any French patrols. It was literally an easy warm up for a fresh regiment to get used to being in the combat theatre. All Simmerson had to do turn up, be polite to the Spanish, and maybe sound out some light troops for a little recce whilst Hogan arranges the real work of blowing up a bridge. To screw up on that level was a demonstration of utter incompetence beyond easy description. When the mission boils down to "turn up, be polite, wait for someone else to do the work, leave" and the commander still screws up, that is not something you can explain away.

Don't ask me where but I read to that a master at Eton College who was a notorious flagellant boasted; "Today I flogged a Major in his majesty's guards" - a boy who would have been 12 - 14 years old. However engineers along with artillery officers had to have a serious technical education.

Damn I had no idea. I have seen him in a few things, most prominently in my mind Willow and Sharpe and was fond of his performances. RIP. Thanks for posting this I would have had no idea he sadly passed away without it.

@FerretJohn Yes, he was mostly "known" as the basketball shooting, older brother "Chuck" who went MIA on "Happy Days" which is what probably led him to being cast in "Willow" directed by Ron Howard (aka "Richie Cunningham.") However, one of Gavan's best roles was as the murderous "Dan Suggs" in "Lonesome Dove."

I love how the guy behind Simmerson, as soon as Simmerson steps forward after being dressed down, looks at him like 'What are you doing?' and then when Simmerson goes on to threaten their commander who is much better connected them Simmerson, he looks to the floor like 'could you swallow me, please? it would be less embarrassing'

That slight pause in his writing when Simmerson tells him Lennox panicked. Something very easy to miss, most watching the scene for the first time probably didn't even see it. Yet when you do, it gives a real sense of just how much Wellesley was restraining himself from going off on Simmerson right then and there.

I've watched this scene on and off more times than I care to disclose.

The acting/story-telling is superb.

Even background actors show what is going on. Capt. Leroy looks to Hogan regarding Sharpe... knowing that what Simmerson is saying is BS.

Every time I watch I find something new. Just excellent acting and story telling.

Sharpe's Eagle was the first in the series I read (used book stores rarely have full collections or the same editions so chronological order was never an option). Sharpe proved to be an excellent training kit on how to recognize bad and practice good leadership when I was in the military.

@james ward-gwilliam I just spent the last hour going through my closet trying to find my copy of Eagle. All I've found so far was the end cap for my bow stringer and some empties. If I find the book, well, that would actually prove nothing since I can't post pictures and it's a matter of no consequence anyways.

I had seen the Star studded film 'Royal Flash', but likewise my first Flashman book was a few into the series. I reccommend them, because they are mostly historically interesting too. Lots of infamous and famous people appear, including Wellington, Lincoln and Bismarck.

Fantastic scene, David Troughton was a superb Wellington. With a few more quid to spend, this could have been an epic series (more scale for the battle scenes, either real or CGI) even more than it was.

This, along with the New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes are the two of the greatest TV shows ever made and a testament to the talent that was in the old regionalised ITV. Shame a lot of it was lost in the merger.

It's so many details in acting and tone, so mane hints and clues - but the mimic of Leeroy is just gold. His 'Oh god, I don't wanna be here'-look, all the time, the 'what are you doing you damn fool', when Simmerson starts to still insist on his nephew (I think) for Captain, when he blames Lennox, when he starts to 'threaten' Wellington with the horse guards...
You could read the whole scene unfold just from watching Leeroys face. And that's just so great :D

This scene in the books is even better (but I get why they couldn’t do it with budget issues), Lenox died holding a square protecting the colours, Sharpe led a small detachment of light company against the cavalry in line formation (which is obviously super dangerous as we’re told many times) and managed to reach the square as it fell reclaiming one of the colours before it was ridden off with. Simmerson then blew the bridge abandoning all the wounded and Sharpe’s men + one regimental colour on the other side with the French who now massively outnumber Sharpe, they then had a second battle where Sharpe’s men managed to capture a light cavalry gun from the French and use it to drive them back. Then after all that we get to hear Simmerson try and get Hogan and Sharpe given a court martial for their actions XD

Really recommend people read/listen to it, the taking of the Eagle is better too imo. The whole light company completely voluntarily charges with Sharpe and Harper to go reclaim a colour to replace the one Simmerson lost.

This is such an iconic scene, very well played (acted) out. It is one of my favorites if not the best ever.
Though I recall the very first time I watched this particular scene I was so into it that after watching it twice, I had to see the scene (a couple of times) on what all this discussion was about or based on. So after watching it then going back and watching this iconic scene again just made it all the more pleasant! Wellington puts his boot so far up Simmerson’s ass….it now has become a classic scene!
I’ll never get tired of viewing this scene!
Also, yes excellent acting!

As soon as he leaves Wellington's office, Simmerson is so insulated from reality, from accepting responsibility for his own actions, from recognising his own shortcomings, that he immediately decides that Sharpe is the deliberate engineer of his downfall.

Sharpe's actions showed him up which was bad enough for his pride. But Simmerson was also one of those who believed officers should be of noble birth. Sharpe was a commoner promoted from the ranks and that would really have rubbed salt in his ego's wounds.

^shaking my head^ Where I work, the recycling bin is at our other shop across the street, and the cardboard has to get hauled there on the truck "I'm not paying for no recycling bin here! Where we gonna put it anyway? There's no room in the yard for it", is what the boss said. Somehow he found a new spot for the dumpster and the scrap metal bin when they enlarged the warehouse. They don't have a scrap metal bin at the other location down the street, so I back haul the scrap metal back to the other shop after dropping off the cardboard recycling. And around and around we go,back and forth, driving in circles, wasting labour hours on work that shouldn't need to be done...and nobody ever answers or is called to account for the shame and the disgrace. I swear the company has a wastage allocation as a fixed expense in the budget, and that's where the golf course membership fees come out of.

The difference between Wellesley and Simmerson?
Sir Wellesley (The future Duke of Wellington) didn't buy his rank, he actually worked his ass off and saw many battles. He's also famous for his adaptive defensive style of warfare, resulting in several victories against numerically superior forces while minimising his own losses. He is regarded as one of the greatest defensive commanders of all time, and many of his tactics and battle plans are still studied in military academies around the world. And Simmerson has the nerve to say Sir Wellesley doesn't know what makes a good soldier when in fact he did as he himself was a soldier.

@Austin Seven You couldn't buy the rank of Colonel either, because that was the rank at which you could command a regiment, the building block of the British Army (and most other armies) at the time. The purchase system also went quite a long way to financing Britains' grossly oversized army (during wartime at least. Also in common with many other European powers, we had the habit of reducing the army to dangerously low levels in peacetime, leading to a scramble of recruitment when war inevitably popped up again)

The purchase system was horrendously flawed, though at least there was a time stipulation at each rank before you could buy the next promotion. Allowing any rich buffoon to have full control of your armies would've been ridiculous, and probably suicidal!

Wellesey did buy his rank up to Lt.Colonel, he just happened to have the skills for the job (along with coming from a wealthy family and have the right connections).

It was very rare in the British Army to get through the junior and middle officer ranks without buying your promotions.
