Switchin' to Glide
Kings Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From a Tuesday point of view
Like a kettle in the kitchen
I feel the steam begin to brew
Switchin' to Glide
Energy can be directed
I'm turning it up I'm turning it down
Even love can be affected
Switching to Glide..Balancing in my head..inside of me...
taking the glide path instead.
Everybody gets the no-no
Hear it ringing in they ears
Lots of ways that you can go GO!
Look around NO disappears
The lyrics of the song "Switchin' to Glide" by Kings celebrate the excitement and freedom of the weekend, and the feeling of breaking free from the monotony of the workweek. The singer starts by saying that nothing really matters except for the weekend, which, from the perspective of someone stuck in the office on a Tuesday, seems like an oasis in the midst of a desert. The analogy of a kettle in the kitchen about to boil captures the sense of anticipation and excitement building inside of him.
Then, the chorus kicks in, with the proclamation that he's "switchin' to glide." This phrase encapsulates the idea that he's shifting gears, changing his attitude, and leaving behind his workweek persona in favor of a more carefree and adventurous version of himself. He talks about how energy can be directed, turned up or down, and how even love can be affected by this change. Ultimately, the goal is to find balance, like gliding gracefully through life, rather than struggling and pushing through.
The singer suggests that everyone should embrace this sense of freedom and possibility, and not let the word "no" prevent them from exploring all the different paths that life has to offer. This song is a quintessential anthem of the post-punk era, combining elements of new wave, power pop, and punk rock, with catchy guitar riffs, driving basslines, and exuberant vocals.

The transition from This Beat Goes On to Switchin' to Glide is one of those transcendent moments in rock music, where you can't believe something this good exists. I was aware of this song because of my dad listening to album rock radio in the car in the '90s, but it's only now, closer to middle-age, where I can appreciate fully how great this is. Like "Driver's Seat" or "Ah! Leah!", it's one of those songs that's easy to fall through the cracks for years if not decades, but then you hear it again and just say "oh my god, THIS song!!!"
