You Do
Kings Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to, do you know?
Do you get what you're hoping for?
When you look behind you there's no open door.
What are you hoping for, do you know?
Once we were standing still in time,
And you knew how I loved you but my spirit was free,
Laughing at the questions that you once asked of me.
Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to, do you know?
Now looking back at all we planned,
We let so many dreams just slip through our hands.
Why must we wait so long before we see
How sad the answers to those questions can be?
Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to, do you know?
Do you get what you're hoping for?
When you look behind you there's no open door.
The lyrics of King's song "You Do" highlight the contemplation of one's purpose in life and whether they are headed towards their desired destination. The first verse questions whether the individual is aware of their direction and if they are content with the opportunities presented to them. The second verse reflects on past experiences and how chasing fantasies might have led to missed opportunities. The chorus repeats the essential themes of the song- the importance of knowing one's path and whether it is leading to desired outcomes.
The lyrics suggest a sense of regret and a realization of missed opportunities. The line 'we let so many dreams slip through our hands' implies the individual might contemplate the roads not taken and what might have been. The line 'when you look behind you there's no open door,' emphasises the need to focus on the present and move forward instead of dwelling on the past.
Overall, King's 'You Do' conveys an inspiring message that urges us to reflect on our lives and whether we are heading towards our desired destination.
