Dust
Kings Kaleidoscope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dust to earth and ash to ocean
Evanescent, fading fast
You are all I really have

I'm not home till heaven opens
Life's a vapor while it lasts
You are all I really have
Living for experiences
I romanticize thrill
Maximize my achievements
But I'm not satisfied still

I'm realizing, that all my striving
Is chasing wind, is chasing wind
But you free'd me, So I can just be
Nothing to prove, Nothing to lose

The vapor of humanity
A tapestry of vanity
The cycle of depravity
A carousel of fantasy

Don't let me fall apart
Be near my wandering heart

Hold me closely through this race
Help me embrace your pacing

Overall Meaning

In the first stanza of "Dust", the lyrics reflect on the impermanence of life and acknowledge that despite our own fleeting existence we always have God to turn to. The lyrics "Dust to earth and ash to ocean" highlight our earthly bodies being returned to the ground, while "Evanescent, fading fast" suggests how quickly life can pass us by. The repetition of "You are all I really have" emphasizes that despite the impermanence of everything else, God is the one constant in life that we can always hold onto.

The second stanza draws a comparison between worldly experiences and spiritual fulfillment, suggesting that we often chase the former without ever truly being satisfied. The lyrics "I'm realizing, that all my striving is chasing wind" speaks to trying to chase something that we can never catch, whereas "But you free'd me, so I can just be" acknowledges that true peace and contentment can only be found by accepting God's love and grace. The final stanza speaks to the idea of overcoming struggles with the help of God, with the lyrics "Don't let me fall apart, be near my wandering heart" suggesting that we constantly need God's guidance in our lives.

This is one of the most underrated bands ever. Secular and Christian. The fact that we have THIS good of music and it's giving thanks to Him fills me with so much joy. The music arrangements, the mixing, lyrics.... It's all done so flawlessly.
