After first earning notice thanks to a series of acclaimed European festival appearances during the summer of 1999, the twosome signed to American label Kindercore to issue their lovely eponymous debut the following spring. Quiet Is the New Loud was issued in early 2001 on Astralwerks. The album used many of the same tracks from the Kindercore release but re-ordered them and replaced a few with newer songs. The remix album Versus followed later in the year and featured remixes by artists as diverse as Ladytron, avid Whitaker and Four Tet. After a three year layoff during which Øye recorded a solo album, 2003's Unrest, and gained some reknown as an electronica DJ while Bøe worked on finishing up his psychology degree, the pair teamed up again for the recording and release of 2004's Riot on an Empty Street.
After a 5 year layoff, the band released Declaration Of Dependence on October 20, 2009 on Astralwerks in the US and Virgin Records in the UK.
Erlend Øye has released some solo material and is also a member of The Whitest Boy Alive.
Eirik Glambek Bøe is also a member of a second band, Kommode. The Whitest Boy Alive and Kommode toured together this year for a short period.
Me in You
Kings of Convenience Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To pass and look back at goals I've missed
Rainbows or burning bridges
If you squint a little more it looks the same
But ooh
There's a little bit of me inside you
Gathering what you've lost
There's a little bit of you in everyone
Can never keep a secret
Problem; lines on your face
You smooth them out so no one can tell
put a straight back upon a stage
could (dance dance) hide the tremor in your hand
But ooh
There's a little bit of me inside you
Gathering what you've lost
But ooh
There's a little bit of you in everyone
And I'm watching you now
I see you building the castle with one hand
while tearing down another with the other
And I'm watching you now
I see you building the castle with one hand
while tearing down another with the other
And I'm watching you now
I see you building the castle with one hand
while tearing down another with the other
In the song Me in You by Kings of Convenience, the lyrics reflect on the idea of choices and crossroads in life. The singer is faced with the option of passing through a crossroads and looking back at the goals they have missed in life. It is said that rainbows and burning bridges look the same when you squint a little more, suggesting that life's choices are not always clear-cut and sometimes have consequences that overlap. The lyrics point out how we all have a little bit of each other inside us, suggesting that our experiences and choices often leave a mark on those around us.
The second verse tells the story of someone struggling with a problem or challenge in life, perhaps represented by the lines on their face. The lyrics suggest that they put all their effort into hiding their problems from the outside world, putting on a brave face and hiding their tremors. Again, the idea is touched on that we all harbor hidden secrets and personal struggles that are not immediately visible to others. The chorus repeats the earlier sentiment that there is always a little bit of ourselves in others and a little of others in us. The closing lines focus on watching someone else build and tear down simultaneously, suggesting that life is often a balancing act between creation and destruction.
