The lyrics to "I Want You" by Kings of Leon are about a guy who is reminiscing about a past relationship and trying to get it back on track. The first few lines talk about him trying to get back on track by buying some booze, and then he mentions a girl who he thinks is too cool for him. He's going to a hayride and wants to make a good impression, so he urges her to put on her best dress.
The second verse talks about him wanting to spend time with her and play his favorite tunes. He mentions a place they can go to be alone together. Then the chorus comes in where both the guy and the girl keep repeating that they want each other “just exactly like I used to” because things are only getting worse since they broke up.
In the last verse, the lyrics take a darker turn when he talks about how a friend of his has video proof of his girl cheating on him. She denies it at first but then admits to wanting him back just like before despite how things have gone since. The song ends with both of them repeating they want each other "just exactly like I used to" and acknowledging that things were only bringing them down.
