Fairest Lord Jesus
Kingsway Music Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
O Thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul's glory, joy and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heav'n can boast.

All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly,
Wondrously, Jesus, is found in Thee;
None can be nearer, fairer or dearer,
Than Thou, my Savior, art to me.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be Thine.

Overall Meaning

The hymn, "Fairest Lord Jesus," exalts the beauty and magnificence of Jesus Christ, as well as His supremacy over all of nature. The lyrics are a testimony to the songwriter's awe and reverence for Jesus, the Son of God and man, who is worthy of all honor, glory, and adoration. From the natural beauty of the meadows and woodlands in the springtime to the brilliance of the moon, stars, and sun, nothing compares to the surpassing greatness of Jesus, who makes the heart that is burdened and sorrowful sing with joy. Such beauty and glory can only be found in Him, who is the source of all earthly and heavenly beauty.

The hymn consists of four stanzas, each highlighting a different aspect of Jesus' beauty and splendor. In the first stanza, Jesus is hailed as the ruler of all nature, both divine and human, and the most precious possession of the singer's soul. The second and third stanzas compare the beauty of nature to the incomparable radiance of Jesus, the most beautiful and pure of all. And in the fourth and final stanza, Jesus is praised as the Lord of all nations, the Son of God and man, who deserves all honor, glory, and adoration.
