Wild Man From Borneo
Kinky Friedman Lyrics

(Kinky Friedman)

I'm the star of Captain Midnite's travelin' show
Came to this circus many moons ago.
My mother's in your storybooks, she loved a jungle king,
Left me standin' here alone inside the center ring.

In a bamboo cage I crossed the ragin' sea,
A livin' page torn clean from history.
A hairy, scary, legendary screamin' souvenir,
Now don't you come too close to me, don't you come too near.

I'm the wild man from Borneo,
The wild man from Borneo.
You come to see what you wanna see,
Ah, you come to see but you never come to know.

The tattooed lady left the circus train
Lost all of her pictures in the rain.
I wonder if you're happy, I wonder if you're free
I wonder if you'll ever know the mark you left on me.

I'm the wild man from Borneo, The wild man.
You come to see what you wanna see,
Ah, you come to see but you never come to know.

We come to see what we want to see,
Oh, we come to see, but we never come to know.

Overall Meaning

The song "Wild Man From Borneo" by Kinky Friedman tells the story of a man who was brought to America from Borneo as a young child and raised in a traveling circus. He is now the star of the Captain Midnite's travelin' show and is known as the "wild man". The man is lonely and isolated, feeling like an outsider and spectacle among the people who come to see him. He reminisces about his mother, who he says loved a jungle king, leaving him all alone in the center ring.

The man describes himself as a "screaming souvenir", highlighting how he feels like an object to be gawked at. He warns people not to come too close to him, emphasizing a sense of fear and danger that surrounds him. The song's chorus features the line "You come to see what you wanna see, Ah, you come to see but you never come to know", illustrating the disconnect between the performer and his audience.

The last verse sees the man reflect upon the tattooed lady who left the circus and wonders if she's happy and free. He also expresses his hope that someday people will come to "know the mark" he's left on them, suggesting he desires a more genuine connection with others.

Overall, the song examines themes of loneliness, isolation, and the human tendency to seek out and exploit the "other". It's a haunting portrait of a man trapped in a life of performance and spectacle.

Severe violations if ya know what I mean. It took off that oh sigh mighty sheen. It's not worth it being the bright ray of sun beam. It's best it's over now before it becomes a bad dream. That's our fate so it seems. The wild man of Borneo swims into the headstream. A man not of any extremes although some say cannot redeem...a head full of cryposystems. A Juan man army not of any team.
