With their make-up and costumes, the band members took on the personae of comic book-style characters: the Starchild (Stanley), the Demon (Simmons), the Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley), and the Catman (Criss). Due to creative differences, both Criss and Frehley had departed the group by 1982.
In 1983, Kiss began performing without makeup and costumes, thus marking the beginning of the band's "unmasked" era that would last for over a decade. The band experienced a commercial resurgence during this era, with the Platinum-certified album Lick It Up successfully introducing them to a new generation of fans, and its music videos received regular airplay on MTV. Eric Carr, who had replaced Criss in 1980, died in 1991 of heart cancer and was replaced by Eric Singer. In response to a wave of Kiss nostalgia in the mid-1990s, the original lineup re-united in 1996, which also saw the return of its makeup and stage costumes. The resulting reunion tour was highly successful, grossing $143.7 million, making it the band's most successful tour to date. Criss and Frehley subsequently left the band again, and have been replaced by Singer and Tommy Thayer. The band has continued with its original stage makeup, with Singer and Thayer using the original Catman and Spaceman makeup, respectively. In September 2018, Kiss announced that, after 45 years of recording and performing, it would be embarking on its ongoing final tour, the End of the Road World Tour, which started in January 2019 and concluded in December 2023.
Kiss is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, as well as one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including 21 million RIAA-certified albums. Kiss also holds the title as America's No. 1 Gold record award-winning group of all time, having earned 30 Gold albums. Kiss has 14 Platinum albums, with three albums being multi-Platinum. On April 10, 2014, the four original members of Kiss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kiss was ranked by MTV as the ninth "Greatest Metal Band of All Time", and placed tenth on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list, as well as being ranked as the third "Best Metal and Hard Rock Live Band of All Time" by Loudwire magazine.

When I was walking by
They talked about me
What could it be
They tried to break me
Never could make me
Out in the streets
Dancin' in the sheets, oh yeah
All those streaks in my hair
People point at me and stare
If they ask me I'll say, "yeah!"
I'm a freak
And I love the clothes I wear
Where their life goes I don't care
It's my price I'm proud to pay
I'm a freak
The called me crazy
It doesn't faze me
I'm doing fine, they're doing time
They tried to break me
Never could make me
Live like a fire
Dancin' with desire
Walkin' on the wire, oh yeah (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I'm a freak and love what I see
I'm a freak and I love being me (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Out in the streets
Takin' all the heat
Dancin' in the sheets, oh yeah
I pledge allegiance to the state of independence
I got streaks in my hair
People point at me and stare
If they ask me I'll say, "yeah!"
I'm a freak
And I love the clothes I wear
Where their life goes I don't care
It's my price I'm proud to pay
I'm a freak
I'm the freak and I love what I see
I'm the freak and I love being me
I'm a freak and that's all I can be
I'm a freak, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I pledge allegiance to the state of independence
The song "Freak" by Kiss is an uplifting anthem that encourages listeners to embrace their unique characteristics and ignore the criticism of others. The lyrics begin with the singer expressing confusion as to why people talk about him as he walks by. He recalls how others have tried to break him down before but they were never successful. Despite being different and standing out in a crowd, the singer is proud of who he is and loves the clothes he wears. He doesn't care where others' lives go because he is free to live his own way, even if it means facing criticism.
Throughout the song, the singer emphasizes the message of self-acceptance and being proud of one's individuality. They sing of being a "freak" and loving themselves for it. The chorus repeats the line "I'm a freak and I love what I see/I'm a freak and I love being me," which drives home the theme of the song. The final lines of the song switch gears and include an allegiant pledge to "the state of independence," further emphasizing the idea of being true to oneself and breaking away from societal norms.
Overall, "Freak" takes a positive stance on individuality and serves as a reminder to be proud of who you are, no matter how different you may feel. The song encourages listeners to embrace their unique qualities and not let the opinions of others bring them down.
