I Can't Stop the Rain
Kiss Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night falls on the city
Finds me all alone
Makes me wonder
Should I just go on home

And I walk up the stairs
To see if you're sill there
Would you mind if
I found you alone

Then a cold wind came callin'
Strange how it knew it'd bother me
See the night would fade
But the pain's gonna stay
Makes me wonder
Have you ever made love to me

I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' strikes across the sky
Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' only blinds my eyes

Ain't it sad
When the only love I ever had
Just slips away
Right through my fingers

Ain't it a shame when I think of your name
The only memory I have is it

I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' strikes across the sky
Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
It takes a witch to curse that goddamn sky

I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' strikes across the sky
Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
'Cause lightnin' only blinds my eyes

Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
'Cause lightnin' only blinds my eyes

Can't stop it, blinds my eyes

Overall Meaning

In "I Can't Stop the Rain," Kiss creates a moody, melancholic sound with emotional lyrics that express pain and loss. The first verse paints a picture of a lonely night in the city with the singer wondering whether it's worth continuing on alone. The second verse reveals that the singer is searching for someone in particular, climbing the stairs to see if that person is still there. However, the person is not there, and the singer is left contemplating the memories of their love. The chorus serves as a climactic point, where the singer is filled with despair and laments that they can't stop the rain, that the lightning only blinds their eyes.

The lyrics depict the singer's inability to let go of a past love and the pain that arises from that inability. They can't escape the rain, which is symbolized as the memories of a relationship that they can't forget. Moreover, the lightning that strikes across the sky is representative of the unexpected and jarring nature of love and loss. Even with this knowledge, the singer can't stop their emotions from interfering with them, and that's the reason they have difficulty moving on.

This song was better than a lot of the kiss songs and should have been pushed up the charts.

This solo album should have gotten better promotion and radio airplay. There are so many possible hits with mass appeal: Easy Thing, Kiss The Girl Goodbye, Don't You Let Me Down, and this song. Peter Criss had so much soul and feel, great vocalist. Seems like this album was a wasted opportunity. 🐾
