I Gave My Wedding Dress Away
Kitty Wells Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tomorrow was to be my wedding day
But I gave my wedding dress away
Another will be holding my bouquet
So I gave my wedding dress away

My baby sister wanted him
And so she took my place
It's worth the broken heart to see
The smile upon her face

I've cared for her since mother went away
So I gave my wedding dress away

Everything I ever wanted
She always wanted too
And maybe giving in to her
Was not the thing to do

I always let her have her way
Perhaps I wasn't strong
But I was all she had to turned to
When anything went wrong

She's all I have to live for
She's the only joy I ever had
And though she's hurt me many times
She really isn't bad

I saw the love light in her eyes
The day she met my Jim
Then I knew that he belonged to her
And she belonged to him

If I could win him back again
Our love would be divine
But I could never break her heart
The way that she broke mine

I'll worship him until my dying day
But I gave my wedding dress away

Overall Meaning

Kitty Wells's song "I Gave My Wedding Dress Away" tells the story of a woman who sacrifices her own happiness for her younger sister's. The singer had planned to get married the next day but gave away her wedding dress to her sister instead, who had fallen in love with her fiancé. The song conveys the singer's sadness and heartbreak at the loss of her love, but also her selflessness and love for her sister.

The song is a poignant reflection on the close bond between siblings and the sacrifices we make for those we love. The singer has cared for her sister since their mother's passing and feels a deep sense of obligation towards her. She puts her own feelings aside for the sake of her sister's happiness, showing us the depth of her love and devotion.

The theme of sacrifice is further emphasized through the repeated refrain, "But I gave my wedding dress away." This phrase serves as a reminder of the singer's selfless act and the impact it has had on her life.

The meaning of the song is bitter sweet and it shows how far a big sister’s love can go she gave up her happiness for her baby sister and never held it against her for stealing her only happiness as long as her baby sister was happy that’s all that matters “I cared for her since mother went away.”

she was my fav singer since I was about 7 yrs old..never changed. I've never stopped listening to her music over all the years. I've prayed for her and thanked God for that comforting voice in song during the horrible yrs of childhood and there was nothing to look forward to. She could only have been an amazing woman.
