Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

If you'd make up your mind
Quit triflin' all the time
If you'd make up your mind, I still love you
If you'd quit foolin' around
And be the guy I thought I found
Go settle down
And quit your triflin' ways
'Cause the buggarman's gonna get you one of these days
If you'd just settle down
You'd be the sweetest guy in town
I'd love you if you'd just make up your mind
If you'd make up your mind
Quit flirtin' all the time
If you'd make up your mind, I still want you
If you'd quit seein' the town
And ev'ry girl that's hangin' around
I'd love you if you'd just make up your mind
Go settle down
And quit your triflin' ways
'Cause the buggarman's gonna get you one of these days
If you'd just settle down
You'd be the sweetest guy in town
I'd love you if you'd just make up your mind
In Kitty Wells's song "Make Up Your Mind," the lyrics are aimed at a man who is indecisive and unfaithful in his relationship. The song is a plea for the man to settle down and make a commitment to the woman he supposedly loves. The lyrics suggest that if he were to change his ways and become more faithful, he would earn the love and respect of the woman in question. The woman is clearly frustrated with the man's behavior and warns him that if he continues to "trifle" with her heart, he will eventually regret it.
The lyrics of this song are simple but effective. They capture the frustration and anger of someone who has been hurt by a partner's infidelity. The repetition of the phrase "if you'd just make up your mind" emphasizes the woman's desire for the man to make a decision about their relationship. The warning that the "buggarman" will catch up with him is a common theme in country music, conveying a sense of impending danger.
Overall, the song is a classic example of country music's ability to convey emotions with simple but powerful lyrics. Its themes of love, loyalty, and commitment continue to resonate with listeners today.
