Sekunden steh'n
Sekunden steh'n!
Ist nur das alte Lied –
Nur das alte Lied!
Werd bloß nicht schwach, Klaus –
Leg dich nicht müd zur Ruh'!
Lauf aus der Nacht, Klaus!
Sie halten dir die Sinne zu
Und wollen ja nur – das alte Lied! –
Dass du noch tattrig singen wirst
Wenn als gebrochener Biskuit
Du zu den faulen Plätzchen irrst!
Nein, mach sie wach, Klaus –
Stör sie in ihrer Ruh!
Lauf in die Nacht, Klaus!
Hören sie dir ruhig zu
Dann sing noch mal das alte Lied
Und zeige wie es klingen soll!
Dann wirds bestimmt zum neuen Lied
Für alle klar und einsichtsvoll!
The song "Das alte Lied" by Klaus Hoffmann brings memories of the past, memories of moments spent together with a loved one in simple and beautiful places. The first verse talks about a giant oak tree on the north end of a village, in the meadow of Hubert, the town's murderer. They used to go there, and when the children came, they would throw nettles on their backs and stomachs. Despite this, they loved the place, and everything the world had to offer. The woman's arm guided him, and together they searched for the seventh heaven in the cornfield. The scent of nettles and the field would make his heart stop for a few seconds.
The second verse describes another memory, this time, in front of a great door in a barn. The farmer forgot about the cows, and they had the chance to ask for beds, straw, and wine. They went to bed together in the hay, and it was a tender moment. They would wake up to the city, work, and money, but he was soon reassured by the woman who took him into her arms like a child from the village. His heart had stopped for a few seconds again. In the last verse, Klaus is warned not to be lured back into the old song, but he is encouraged to wake the people and show them how it really should sound.

Weißt du noch
Do you remember
By the huge oak tree at the northern edge of the village
In der Aue von Hubert, dem Mörder des Ortes
In the meadow of Hubert, the murderer of the town
When the children came and threw nettles on our backs and bellies
When we didn't curse everything that the world offered us, we loved each other there
When your arm led me, through your hair, through the night
When I searched for the seventh heaven in the cornfield again
Then we smelled the nettles, the fields there
Like the children from the town and my heart stood still
Für Sekunden steh'n
For seconds stood still
Vor dem großen Tor an der Scheune
Before the big gate at the barn
Als der Bauer das Kauen vergaß
When the farmer forgot to chew
And you asked for beds, straw or wine
Und dann krachte es im Heu –
And then it cracked in the hay
When in the morning I couldn't hold back the tears
Because I thought of city and job and money
Als die reiche Alte mich holen wollte
When the rich old lady wanted to take me away
Mit Auto und Schmuck, dem Preis für die Welt!
With car and jewelry, the price for the world!
And then you took me like a child from the town
Und mein Herz blieb steh'n –
And my heart stood still
Für Sekunden steh'n!
For seconds stood still!
Als wir die Alten anpumpten
When we asked the elderly for money
When the forester gave me money for the ticket
When the child who wanted money from us
Wasser und Rotz aus den Augen rann
Water and snot ran from its eyes
Und dann hielt der Zug –
And then the train stopped
When I casually jumped onto the step of the nightmares
Und mein Lächeln nach dreizehn Stationen verschwand –
And my smile disappeared after thirteen stations
When I pushed the dirt out of my hair and clothes
And I combed the old song into my face
Ist nur das alte Lied –
Is only the old song
Werd bloß nicht schwach, Klaus –
Don't get weak, Klaus
Leg dich nicht müd zur Ruh'!
Don't go to sleep tired!
Lauf aus der Nacht, Klaus!
Run out of the night, Klaus!
Sie halten dir die Sinne zu
They're blocking your senses
Und wollen ja nur – das alte Lied! –
And only want - the old song!
Dass du noch tattrig singen wirst
That you will still sing clumsily
Wenn als gebrochener Biskuit
When like a broken biscuit
Du zu den faulen Plätzchen irrst!
You wander to the stale cookies!
Nein, mach sie wach, Klaus –
No, make them wake up, Klaus
Stör sie in ihrer Ruh!
Disturb them in their peace!
Lauf in die Nacht, Klaus!
Run into the night, Klaus!
Hören sie dir ruhig zu
Let them listen to you calmly
Dann sing noch mal das alte Lied
Then sing the old song again
Und zeige wie es klingen soll!
And show how it should sound!
Dann wirds bestimmt zum neuen Lied
Then it will definitely become a new song
Für alle klar und einsichtsvoll!
For everyone clear and insightful!

Bitter sweet
Werde bald 58, höre ihn schon ewig ☺️
