Kultuurfeestent
Kobus! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"Ek wil 'n CD uitgee
Wil hê dat hul my foto in Huisgenoot plaas"

"My drome is onrealisties

En sy tweede trefferklink so
Elke dag 'n nuwe uitreiking, hoe nootvas of hoe plat

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kobus!'s song "Kultuurfeestent" depict the state of the music industry in South Africa, where mediocrity and self-promotion seem to have taken over talent and quality. The song starts with the phrase "Ons is gyselaars in een groot kultuurfeestent," which means "We are hostages in a big cultural tent." The tent represents the South African music industry, where artists are trapped and controlled by a system that values self-promotion and image over talent and originality. The second line adds to this idea, saying, "Word vermaak deur mense met meer selfvertoue as talent," meaning that people with more self-confidence than talent are the ones entertaining the masses.

The following verse expands on this theme by giving examples of people who want to be famous and successful in music but have no real talent or ideas. They just want their photo in a magazine or to send a video to a TV show, without any real artistry or creativity. The chorus repeats the opening lines, emphasizing the idea that artists and music lovers are trapped in a system that promotes mediocrity and superficiality.

Overall, the song is a criticism of the current state of the South African music industry, which seems more focused on promotion and image than on talent and originality. It shows how people are being held hostage by a system that values superficiality over substance.

Would you be able to upload the song- Ons is saam. I absolutely love your slower more acoustic sounding songs. Not to say that I don't love the hard-core albums, but these hit hard in such a different way with the superb use of emotive language.
