Way Back When
Kodalin-e Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We never had that much to do
So we just lay around in someone’s house
Someday I’ll have it all again
Just like way back when

Back then we’d sleep until the afternoon
And we’d just get up and go outside
Open a window, let the breeze blow in
Forget everything

Yea, those will be the days that I will be missing
When I’m old and when I’m gray and when I stop working
I hope that I can say
When all my days are done
We were just having fun

Well we’d go drinking in the afternoon
Lie out on the grass, so fall asleep
Oh will I ever see that girl again?
The girl from way back when

Yea, we used to share a cigarette
And throw together everything we had
And then you’re driving in my parents’ car
And loving straight til you fall

Yea, those will be the days that I will be missing
When I’m old and when I’m gray and when I stop working
I hope that I can say
When all my days are done
That I had my fun

Those will be the days I had my fun

Yea, in time we moved so fast
Some things are made to last
Here's to you , my dear old friend
From way back when

Yea, those will be the days that I will be missing
When I’m old and when I’m gray and when I stop working
I hope that I can say

When all my days are done
That I had my fun

Overall Meaning

Kodalin-e's song Way Back When is a nostalgic reflection on the carefree days of youth. The lyrics describe a time when there wasn't much to do, but simply laying around with friends in somebody's house was enough. The singer longs for those days and hopes to recapture them someday, when life was uncomplicated and all that mattered was having fun.

The first verse paints a picture of lazy afternoons spent sleeping in and then hanging out outside with friends. The second verse describes drinking in the afternoon, lying on the grass, and falling asleep. The singer reminisces about a particular girl they used to know, and the memories they shared together. The bridge brings a sense of poignancy to the song, recognizing that these carefree days will be missed when the singer is old and gray and no longer able to have that kind of fun.

What's interesting about this song is how it captures a universal sentiment of longing for the past, when things seemed simpler and easier. It's a feeling that can hit anyone, no matter where or when they grew up, and Kodalin-e's lyrics tap into that nostalgia perfectly. The song is also notable for its catchy melody and the way in which the music perfectly matches the wistful tone of the lyrics.

Yea, those will be the days that I will be missing
When I’m older, when I’m gray and when I’ll stop working
I hope that I can say
When all my days are done
That I had my fun

Those will be the days that won my soul

Kodaline is so good that I want to tell everybody about them, but at the same time keep their music to myself. Because everytime I share music that I love with others they always take credit for finding it, not that who found it first matters, but it always turn into a silent fight about who has better music taste and who finds good music first. Things like that make me want to keep amazing bands like Kodaline for myself.
But oh well; such brilliant music should not be hidden. :)

@dibiasemizcena26

Marie Daadyr I know that feeling, but I think you should just do what you feel is right. I think you should share it! They may forget that you did, but at least you know inside that they wouldn't get there if it wasn't for you. :)

@bhagyashreeinamdar8109

I like your point... But sharing music is wonderful... I want ppl to feel the Beauty of their songs.. You are right.. Goood music should not be hidden

@arianemedrano4455

i felt the same thing 'cos they won't acknowledge you that you them first, but yeah, at least you can bond while playing kodaline's songs

@alejandrorubio4707

Marie Daadyr I personally say kodaline has the best music and that they are so under rated and the lyrics to all of there songs are good, touching, deep, and just great

You can HEAR the intensity, frisson, and quivering in his voice, as he remembers his life. This is why i love Kodaline.

I know, right? And the pause before the last 'that I had my fun', with the little breath like he's fighting back tears gets me every time, I swear.
