Born in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo to a Congolese mother and Ghanaian father, Koffi grew up in Kinshasa.
He went to France to study, while in Paris, he began playing the guitar and writing songs. On his return to Congo he was a member of Viva la Musica, Papa Wemba's band. Koffi repopularized the slower style of soukous, which had fallen out of fashion. He dubbed this style Tcha Tcho, and it gained popularity outside Congo. Koffi's music can be quite controversial, taking on current events and topics considered taboo in some conservative societies. He has also participated in the salsa music project Africando.

The lyrics to Koffi Olomidé's song Loi are primarily in Lingala and contain various cultural references and phrases that may be difficult to fully understand without context. The recurring phrase "Ah mingizile, ba yaya mingizile" roughly translates to "Oh my brothers, brothers help me." This phrase serves as a call for unity and assistance, emphasizing the importance of community in difficult times. The subsequent lines are less clear in meaning, but describe a situation where someone is trying to make their way through a difficult journey or task, perhaps with the help of others.
The next section of the song references the concept of "pesa mbongo," or paying money to those in authority or power in order to gain favor or influence. The phrase "Shamukuale ya ko pesa mbongo" roughly translates to "Shamukuale, father of those who pay bribes." This section may reflect the corrupt practices of certain individuals and institutions in Congolese society, but also shows the singer's disdain for such practices. The lyrics go on to say that "pesa mbongo" is something that others have done to him, but he will not give in and do the same to others.
The rest of the song contains various cultural references and phrases that may be difficult to interpret without context. However, the lyrics continue to emphasize the importance of community and unity in the face of adversity, as well as the need to stand up against corruption and injustice.
