The band's first taste of mainstream success came with the release of their fourth album Wild and Peaceful (1973), which contained the US top-ten singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". Kool & the Gang subsequently entered a period of decline before they reached a second commercial peak between 1979 and 1986 following their partnership with Brazilian musician and producer Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor to the lineup. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), their highest selling album with two million copies sold in the US. Their hit singles during this period included "Ladies' Night", the US No. 1 "Celebration", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", "Misled", and "Cherish". The band continues to perform worldwide, including as support for Van Halen in 2012 and their fiftieth-anniversary tour in 2014.
Kool & the Gang have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and, in 2006, a Music Business Association Chairman's Award for artistic achievement. As well the band has been inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame and been bestowed with a MOBO Award for Outstanding Achievement, the Soul Train Legend Award, the Marian Anderson Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. During 2018, the Bells, Brown, and Taylor were also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received their first-time nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. Their discography includes 23 studio albums and almost 70 singles. They have sold 7.5 million and 4.5 million RIAA-certified albums and singles, respectively, in the United States. Worldwide, they have sold 70 million albums.

We sendin’ this one out to all those lovers
Who have someone who can trust
The special love in your love, yeah
Oh, this thing called love is easy to say
Not so hard to do, many games that we play
Just like Monopoly, ooh, you rolled the dice
Chance you take, pray it's right
Like your best friend, oh, the confidante
Want a special love to love you like your mama
I found a special love, special love in you
And I want you to believe in me like I believe in you
Trust me like I trust in you, yeah
And I wanna spend my life with you, baby
Girl, I got trust in you, yeah
Even when I’m away from home
Just trust me, if you call, I’m gon' find my way to you
Ain’t nothin’ but the best of me for my girl
Even through those hard times, our love comes shinin’ through
I played my share of games before I met you
That time has passed away, but we’re just someone new
[Incomprehensible] in no one else when things ain’t goin’ right
Without you by my side, I just can’t sleep at night
Oh, trust me like I trust in you, yeah
And I wanna spend my life with you, baby
Girl, I got trust in you, yeah, oh, yeah, yeah
Every time I think of you leaving me
I get so shook up to drive me on my edge
And if you put your trust in me, I won’t let you down
I bet you got that, our destiny is you and I
Let the record show, not wrecks to flow
You might catch me anywhere, private jet, you go
You already know I got another show
Then after the show I’m back home to you
Back home to you, back home to you, you feel me?
Trust me, I'll be waitin' on you
‘Coz you complete the things that I do
Even when you come, I'm by side
Don't worry 'bout nothin', I'll be alright
I'll be waitin' on you, all you have to do is just trust me
Trust me just like I trust in you, yeah
I wanna spend my life with you, baby
Just like I trust in you, girl
Trust in me, baby, keep on lovin’ me
Trust in me, like I believe in you
Trust in me, baby
I don’t wanna live without you, how do I?
Just trust me
The song "Trust Me" by Kool & the Gang is all about the trust that two people in love must have with each other. The lyrics express the desire for a special love in life that will allow the singer to believe in his partner and vice versa. The song underscores the need to have a strong bond of trust in any relationship in order to make it work. The singer talks about how love is something that we can talk about easily, but it is not always easy to put it into action.
The song begins by talking about the importance of having someone who can trust. This theme runs through the whole song, and the singer frequently returns to the idea of trust and belief in the relationship. He uses powerful imagery to drive home his message, comparing love to a game of Monopoly, where rolling the dice is like taking a chance in love. He wants his partner to trust him like he trusts her, even when he is away from home.
The song's message is clear: trust in a relationship is crucial, and it can make or break the bond between two people. The lyrics are honest, heartfelt, and relatable, making the song a classic that still resonates with listeners today.
