Die Mensch Maschine
Halb Wesen und halb Ding
Die Mensch Maschine
Halb Wesen und halb Überding

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kraftwerk's Die Mensch-Maschine talk about the fusion of humanity and technology. The title itself translates to "The Man-Machine" and the song reflects the band's fascination with the relationship between humans and machines. The first lyrics "Halb Wesen und halb Ding" translate to "Half human and half thing" which is a representation of the idea of the human and the machine being inseparable. Kraftwerk explores the idea that we as humans are becoming more like machines with the advancement of technology, and that machines are becoming more like us with the implementation of artificial intelligence.

The second half of the first verse, "Halb Wesen und halb Überding" translates to "Half human and half supertask" which can be interpreted as the idea of human beings becoming superhuman through the integration of technology. The lyrics throughout the song are simple, yet powerful in their message - humanity and technology are becoming one, and we are becoming both the creators and creations.

I just want to put this out here and I'm sure nobody will read this, but every time I listen to this, it brings a tear to my eye. My dad was stationed in German in '78-'79 and brought this LP home. I listened to it for hours. He passed away in 2010 and when I hear this it reminds me of how much I miss him. Thank you dad for introducing me to electronic music before most people knew what it was. RIP Schneider and Dad.

Kraftwerk is a very special kind of electronic music. I have had a student exange in GB/Birchinton/Kent in the 80 an he gave me a parting gift a LP of Kraftwerk. That had influencend my musical feel in every direction. God bless you. Alex

I recently manage to get hold of the German version of this album. Wasn't cheap but it sounds so much better in their native language than the English version.
