Btw, this album was so far ahead of its time that it's scary. Back in '81, there were almost no computers except in very advanced applications. Some people had little computers you hooked to your TV to play chess and tennis--we had one at my house, a Tandy. No CDs yet, no cell phones, no PCs or Apple. Word processors were still typewriters. Cable was just getting started for most of the country and TVs had CRTs. Yet Kraftwerk predicted the rise of the computer, saw that it would take over the world and told us not to fear.

While some of their music has a much more antiquated sound and aesthetic, there is so much here that sounded incredibly fresh and futuristic - and still does. The passage from 4:20 still sounds like very modern IDM, it's amazing they managed to compose that back then.

I bought this album in 1981 when I was a Freshman in high school, I still have it in a box somewhere, I think my dad listened to it more than I did. I Later saw these guys in concert while I was stationed in Berlin, East Germany; nobody on the stage, just faceless robots playing synthesizers.

Saw them in the Detroit area at a club called Nitro's during this tour. The audience was white new wavers and black techno fans about a 50/50 mix. Kraftwerk had such a huge impact on techno which started in Detroit that it was cool to see so many black kids. Most of the shows I saw back then had hardly any blacks in the audience. Strange for me because I was following Kraftwerk since the Autobahn days when almost nobody I knew had any idea who they were and you could not have foreseen that Detroit DJs would be using their tracks in their mixes just a few years later. Glad I can say I saw Kraftwerk.

+Kirke182 Interesting observation. I had been a Kraftwerk fan since Autobahn. I already owed this album, but the first time I ever heard anything from the Computer World album on the radio was on a black radio station in Los Angeles in 1982. I can't remember any particular tunes, but there were some early hip-hoppers sampling stuff from the Trans Europe Express album in the early 1980s. Computer World did have kind of a techno-funk feel to it.

I'm pretty sure Trans-Europa Express was in the 70s.  That album was the start of techno.  In Detroit, you would hear that particular song sampled in DJ mixes all over the city.  Eventually, German producers began sending raw sequenced tracks to Detroit for the DJs to use and that was how techno started.

Look up Juan Atkins' Cybotron project, one of the first Detroit techno acts to launch into the mainstream. It was undoubtedly inspired by the kraftwerk records being brought over to the US.

There was a duo in Detroit called Felix & Jarvis who used "Trans-Europa Express" in their mixes in the late 70s and early 80s. In the early 90s, when I got out of the service, there was a local Detroit TV station--really cheesy and amateurish which was part of its charm--and they had a dance show called "The Scene" where you'd see people dancing to mixes that had "Trans-Europa Express." I also heard DJs using Yellow Magic Orchestra songs in their mixes. Every year, Detroit still holds an electronic/techno festival at Hart Plaza.

When this song came out in '81, if you had a home computer, you were the kid that all the other kids in your school wanted to be friends with. Home computers were rare and expensive (The Commodore VIC-20 was $299 when it came out in 1980, which is over $900 in today's money).

@@danablake9349 Pretty much most underground/DJ scenes all over the world in the 80's. USA, Great Britain, France, Australia, any western country. Not only that they were an important influence to many Japanese and South Korean house music acts of that time. And their influence stretched beyond the "Iron Curtain" as well. Pirated cassettes and imported vinyls were hot property in countries like Poland (where Kraftwerk played in 1981 already), Czechoslovakia and the former Soviet Union. In modern day interviews the local bands often mention Kraftwerk as an important inspiration/influence.

We only hear about the "big acts" they influenced but they left quite an imprint in the four corners of the world. I saw Kraftwerk live in London some years back and saw five middle-aged Middle Eastern women wearing hijabs dancing to their music. They were seated two rows behind me. In this live concert I also saw everything from grey-haired old men to a group of teens partying hard. I can't say I've seen this mixture of people from all ages and cultures in any other live concert I've been to, and I've seen a lot of bands live.

One has to experience not just the music, but the time period it existed in. In 1983 there were so few people using computers in their home environments. I would be working on my Mac listing to this and yes beam myself into the future! This music really inspired a techno based world. I love Kraftwerk!

This instrumental sound was used in a soap opera in Brazil in the 80's the soap opera Brilhante, was very successful, at the break of the soap opera and at the time that appeared scenes of the International Airport of Galeão in RJ, was very chic.

It’s about 2020 and I’m listening to this song and this song was how I learned how to tick to and I said tick because there is a difference between ticking and popping. Popping is being robotic from just your joints and ticking is using your joints but ticking of the muscles in between joints. I love this song at 49 like I did at age 12.
