I was stunned that a piece of 'pop' music could be every bit as layered, intricate, innovative as traditional 'classical' music yet be so different. I remember looking around the room and feeling astounded that only three of us appreciated it. My stepdad used to play this on long trips that the family went on. It used to drive my mom bonkers cause she doesn't "get" music without lyrics. There is little music from the 20th century that will still be heard in 500 years (if humanity still exists). Of course, they will still know and hear the old masters, Bach and Beethoven. But the music of Kraftwerk, especially Autobahn, is one of these eternal sounds. This music will survive time.

Autobahn was my introduction to Kraftwerk from my friend's dad when I was in high school in the 80's. He had an amazing audiophile-level setup in his basement and played this for me, knowing I might like it. I was hooked from that moment onward. I'm 52 now and still enjoy my Kraftwerk albums on my own two-channel audio system. The Autobahn track is one of the neatest tracks I've experienced and still one of my favorites. I'm very thankful to Kraftwerk for their music that still remains in our hearts and imaginations. ♥️👍🙂

The fathers of techno. I was 17 years old when Autobahn was released and I immediately fell in love with it, because no one and I mean NO ONE was putting out electronic music like this. Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter were at least 20 years ahead of their time.

If you haven't already, check out their first album, Ralf & Florian -- couple of mindblowing tracks on that album as well. Not as neatly packaged as Autobahn but equally enthralling.

I went out and bought Radioactivity after Autobahn was released; couple years after that I bought Trans-Europe Express, another well-produced album.

Honest to goodness, I found this album at a Goodwill thrift store in very good condition, took it home, and played it on my stereo. I could not get enough if this 23-minute-long musical epic. Reminded me of when I was stationed in Germany during the early 1980s and did some driving on one of the local highways in my 1973 Porsche 911. Kraftwerk is still making music today. Man, this is a real groundbreaker. And it was all analog, tape recording and all. And it sounds like it was recorded tomorrow. Never mind that an edited version was issued on a 45 rpm single and it became the band’s Top-40 single on the U.S. charts in 1974. Enjoy.

Words can't express how this song makes me feel. My dad used to play it when I was a kid and it reminds me deeply of childhood with all the wonder and magic that entails. It began a lifetime love of electronic music. On a purely, musical level, these dudes were ahead of their time and I love the vintage synths sounds. The passage beginning at 3:20 is just gorgeous and can bring me to tears. A classic.

As with you Roger, I heard Autobahn on KMET 94.7 The Mighty Met 74-75. It was played a lot on the overnight so I got to hear it played while working graveyard shift stocking shelves at SAFEWAY Newport Beach. Unique and captivating for its music, I purchased the (vinyl) album, to this day I still own! Listening to Autobahn is one of the defining songs you hear as an 18-19 year old, resonates with you and takes you back in time.

Same here w/ KMET I was in the Navy stationed in Long Beach in 1974. I always got 1st choice on the new Cassettes in the ships store. This was one of them I purchased.
I used to drive the Cuntsevative war mongers nuts with this. My shipmates loved it. LOL!
Especially when we were out near Catalina doing maneuvers. We'd be smoking a doobie in front of the 5 incher, (Big Gun). No one can see us up on the Bridge. Sea wind blew the smoke away. And the watch on top was a stoner friend too!

Inspired Bowie, made music that not only sounds fresh to this day but changed electronic music forever, used synths to come out with futuristic sounds and developed techniques that producers still use to this day

I've listened to this song since the mid-seventies (1974 or 1975). It's seemingly sterile electronic delivery at first soon transforms into a hauntingly melodic composition. Beautiful in it's simplicity. Transcendental, somehow.

My brother is eleven years older than me and was a radio d.j. in the '70s. So I would find and play his cool records (giant console stereo, centerpiece of the living room!!). I had no idea how privileged I was to have access to so much stellar material. Pat Metheny, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Kraftwerk, Zeppelin, Edgar Winter, Traffic, E.L.O., Procol Harum. . . I became a drummer and played for 30 years. When I found Kraftwerk on YouTube, I knew every note!!

As a pupil our teacher asked" Do you want tickets for Kraftwerk?" She was cool, young and beautiful. Great time under Schmidt,and the world was wide open and we drove through Europe with our cars as students which didn't cost much. Worked in factories and had money. My first one was a Karmann Ghia for 200 Mark. Miss it, and we were so friendly to each others. Good memories ! :)

I road the aurobahns with my father in the 1950s and 60s as we travelled to our grandparents in Poland. I have since travelled the autobahns on several occasions, it still holds the mystical fascination for me. This version from Krafttwerk leaves me fighting back tears.

I had this album in 1974 while stationed in Germany! I too drove the Autobahn in my 1967 German Ford Capri sans stereo. Listening to it now. Awesome stereo sound!

I was 11 when I first heard this on BBC Radio1
On the way to school one morning then Jon Peel played this complete version, a few days later!
I've owned copies on Vinyl, Tape, CD and have it on several digital playlists..........I saw Kraftwerk live at the Playhouse, Edinburgh, on the Computer World Tour in 1980/1..........still the best gig I've seen! And I've seen hundreds............No other "group" I've seen or enjoyed, created such an astounding visual, aural, ethereal and soulful spectacle.........

a great synth epic, which i first heard back in 1977, after buying a vinyl version. it certainly influenced me as an electro musician, along with jarre, vangelis and tomita. such a unique piece.

These guys should really be in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. They basically took what people like Silver Apples in New York were doing with loops and the like and formalized it and gave it form that influenced many other groups to follow them.

I was a huge Kraftwerk fan when this recording was released. It was mid 70's, I was active duty Navy homeported in Norfolk, Va. Listening late at night with a serious buzz was how we spent the winter weekends. Kraftwerk's composition was original and fun to listen to.

1974: unpacking the Autobahn-album as a christmas present 'on request', and being mind-blown as a fourteen year-old listening to it the very same evening.

1976: the French artist Jean-Michel Jarre appears in the local charts for the first time with an excerpt from his first LP named "Oxygène", to be followed two years later by "Equinoxe".

1980: Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" documentary series are being shown on national broadcasting, largely introducing Vangelis' music in a most impressive overall experience

Due to these profound musical and spiritual influences,, the life experience would not remain the same afterwards, still having their everlasting impact today. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever".

Still makes my spine tingle every time I hear this! Was introduced to Autobahn at the age of 8. Listened to it for the first time in an aunt's neighbour's car in quadrophonic sound - felt like I was going to dissolve!

I was 12 ... luckily my parents knew someone who worked at Kef and we had some Kef Concerto speakers (they are amazing) ... so I used to lie on the floor next to these speakers and the bass was powerful enough to shake the windows :D

What a blast from the past! I remember buying this album on CD in the late 80s and listening to it often. Although it's dated a bit now, it's still very listenable - no mean feat given it's 48 years old now! Fond memories, and some sad ones, listening to this masterpiece of 70s synth.

This album is so amazingly ahead of it's time....it's truly mind blowing. It was released in 1974 for God's sake. Nearly a half Century ago! No Internet, no Mobile phones, no Sat-nav etc. I've been a fan of them for years & years. Lang lebe Kraftwerk!

I remember at age 15, how awesome this vinyl sounded, after wearing out their 3 previous records. This dude Peter Anderson, and I were like the only Progressive/Electronic music freaks in town, and we had no way to even begin to categorize this album. Most everything electronic was done by Prog Rock bands like ELP, King Crimson, Renaissance, and early Genesis, and such. This wasn't classical-based, this was straight-up electronic, and there was simply nothing like it available that we had heard. Not even on the super-progressive college radio scene. But seriously, truth, If it weren't for Kraftwerk, and this work in general, I wouldn't be listening to 30 freakin' sub-genres of EDM today as an old fucker, getting laughed at, at the clubs! :P

Autobahn war recorded without Karl Bartos, the line-up was Ralf Hütter / Florian Schneider / Wolfgang Flür und Klaus Röder.

this song brings me a lot of memories from when i was a child. i remember my dad would play it on the stereo while washing the car or doing something else, always on saturday morning. he would play this and some other good songs and i always enjoyed listening to all of them. sadly, since we moved to another house things became a lot diferent and now the house feels more silent, even when everyone is still here.
i wish i could just go back in time and revive those memories, at least once.
