Out Alive
Kris Allen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This city's gonna break your heart
It's gonna leave you colder
Bright lights tearing us apart
It's gonna hurt all over

Honestly I'm better off lonely
Promises are just pretend
God help this face I'm wearin'
God help this skin

We can run
We can hide
We can show off our guns and put on a fight
If it's love
Hold on tight, hold on tight
Maybe we'll make it out alive
Maybe we'll make it

I'm searching for the sound of your heartbeat
I'm looking for a sign of life
And I can hear it fading out
Lost my strength
When you lost your fight

Honestly you're better off lonely
Promises are just pretend
God help this faith I'm wearin'
God help this place

We can run
We can hide
We can show off our guns and put on a fight
If it's love
Hold on tight, hold on tight
Maybe we'll make it out alive
Maybe we'll make it

There's gonna be a thousand ways that we could break it
There'll never be an easy way so I'll just say it
'Cause I know that it's not over
No matter how hard we try
Now I'm begging for the chance to make it right
'Cause you've got the best of me
And you'll be the death of me

We can run
We can hide
We can show off our guns and put on a fight
If it's love
Hold on tight, hold on tight
Maybe we'll make it out alive
Maybe we'll make it out alive

(We can run, we can hide oh baby we'll make it out alive)

Overall Meaning

In the song "Out Alive" by Kris Allen, he warns the listener that life in the city is going to break your heart and leave you feeling cold. The bright lights of the city may seem appealing but it's a facade that will tear anyone apart. The pain will be all-consuming and it's better to be lonely and honest about it than to be in fake promises. Kris is pleading to a higher power, asking for help to get him through with the face and skin he is burdened with. He is looking for signs of life in his love, but he fears it fading away. He acknowledges that there will be numerous challenges on the path to happiness but he is willing to confront them all.

The chorus suggests that the only way we will survive is if we hold on to each other tightly. Love is the only thing that can save us in this city that is trying to destroy us. No matter how hard we try to escape, it will never be easy, and there isn't an easy way out. Kris's only hope is to fight with everything he's got because he knows that his love is worth it.

The song is a haunting reminder of how life in the city can be tough, and it's hard to stay afloat. In the end, all you can do is hold on to the ones you love and hope to make it out alive.

I never tire of this song!  It is brilliant, and Kris does a superb job.   There is an acoustic version on YouTube and several recordings of live versions and all are enjoyable.  One of his best songs, and like all he does, should be a bigger hit.   Yes, call me biased, I am a big Kris fan.
