What's Going On
Kris Allen Lyrics

Mother, mother there's too many of you crying
Oh brother, brother, brother there's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some loving here today

Father, father we don't need to escalate
You see war is not the answer for only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some loving here today

Picket lines and picket signs, don't punish me with brutality
Oh and talk to me so you can see
What's going on, oh what's going on
Yeah what's going on, oh what's going on

Mother, mother everybody thinks we're wrong
But who are they to judge us simply because our hair is long
Oh you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today

Picket lines and picket signs, don't punish me with brutality
Oh and talk to me so you can see

What's going on, oh what's going on
Come on, what's going on, oh what's going on

Overall Meaning

Kris Allen's "What's Going On" is a cover of the 1971 song by Marvin Gaye. This song is a plea for peace and an end to senseless violence, particularly in relation to the Vietnam War which was ongoing at the time. The song's opening line, "Mother, mother there's too many of you crying," expresses the pain and sorrow felt by those who have lost loved ones in the war.

Throughout the song, Allen and Gaye both call for unity and understanding as a means of overcoming hate and violence. The lines, "You know we've got to find a way to bring some loving here today" and "Father, father we don't need to escalate / You see war is not the answer for only love can conquer hate" emphasize the need for compassion and empathy in resolving conflicts.

The song also addresses the issue of prejudice and discrimination. The lines, "Mother, mother everybody thinks we're wrong / But who are they to judge us simply because our hair is long," highlights the power and consequences of societal labels.

Most underrated Kris performance from AI8, y/y? Loooooved it, and love this! Usually, Fuller's choices suck, but last season, I think he made two smart choices for Kris and Adam, and both nailed their socially conscious classics and made them their own. And that's why I prefer to remember the travesty of season 9 as season 8's shortbus lil cousin.

A lot of people assumed that Adam was going to win going away but they forgot that Kris Allen is a very talented artist who was able to change up the tunes he was given or chose every week. He is a master at what he does taking songs that are 20,30,40, yrs. old and really brilliantly turn it into something new and fresh. People just heard Adam's voice and said winner, and no doubt he does have one of the best voices to step onto the Idol stage, but what Kris was able to do was amazing. Fair, YES

Another fantastic cover. Song never grows old because the world continues to be on shaky ground. A question that I ask nearly daily.!

kebin65

His live versions are always so much better than his studio ones.

babybelle32

I like the live version better, but this is good too. I still connect with his voice, but the live version was full of raw emotion. It's so funny that he sounds better when the song is stripped down to just him and a piano or guitar. I hope the producers of his cd realize this, and don't try to take away the qualities that make people like him.

potteranger

He deserved to win since he sang man in the mirror, ain't no sunshine, and heartless. He has made many memorable songs and performance in idol's stage..

Nina King

I love Kris version of this song.
