In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in forming the country music supergroup The Highwaymen, and formed a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that eschewed the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing. In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. As an actor, he is known for his roles in Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976) (which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor), Convoy (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980) and Blade (1998).
Kristofferson has said that he would like the first three lines of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" on his tombstone:
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
Love Of Money

Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the work of the devil
Love of money
She began running for the border and her life
Like the wind, straight into the terror of the night
In the end all she had to sell them was her soul
That's the way it goes
Chorus:
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the work of the devil
Love of money
We began reaching for the future like a dream
In a land where everything was free
Wordly men turned their profits into war
No one knows who we're really fighting for
Chorus:
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the work of the devil
Love of money
Chorus:
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the root of all evil
Love of money is the work of the devil
Love of money
The song "Love of Money" by Kris Kristofferson and The Borderlords is a commentary on the negative impact of the pursuit of wealth and the destructive consequences that it can have on individuals and society as a whole. The chorus repeats the mantra that the love of money is the root of all evil, and that it can be attributed to the work of the devil. The lyrics explore the desperation and moral decay that can result from the obsession with material gain.
The first verse tells the story of a woman who flees for her life and must sell her body for the sake of gold. It illustrates the lengths that some people will go to in order to gain wealth and how it can come at a high cost. The second verse describes the American Dream, where the pursuit of prosperity and success can lead to greed and war, with no clear understanding of who is truly benefitting from the profit being made. The chorus is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the message that love of money is the root of all evil, and it ultimately leads to destruction.
Overall, the song is a powerful commentary on the corrupting influence of wealth and materialism. It serves as a warning against the harmful effects of greed and the importance of valuing other things in life beyond just money.

I was working on board the cruise/liner ship HRMS QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 when he was the main entertainer for a night. This CD (3WW) was being sold , i was able to buy 1. Next day we ran aground when the ship was on the way to New York. Kris (and Danny Timms, they were the only performers on the stage of the grand lounge) was transported to Martha's Vineyard. Never in my lifetime i dreamed of watching him live for free, earning a little on the side! Thanks for sharing this.
