The Taker
Kris Kristofferson Lyrics
He's a giver, he'll give her the kind
Of attention that she's never known
He's a helper, he'll help her to open
The doors that she can't on her own.
He's a lover and he'll love her in ways
That she's never been loved before
He's a getter, he'll get her by gettin' her
Into the world she's been hungerin' for.
And manners that I never learned
He's a leader, he'll lead her across
Pretty bridges he's plannin' to burn.
He's a talker, he'll talk her right off of her feet
But he won't talk for long
'Cause he's a doer, and he'll do her the way
That I'd never, damned if he won't do her wrong.
He's a taker, he'll take her to places
And make her fly higher than she's ever dared to
He'll take his time before takin' advantage
Takin' her easy and slow.
And after he's taken the body and soul
She gives him he'll take her for granted
Take off and leave her taken all of her
Pride when he goes.
He's a taker, he'll take her to places
And make her fly higher than she's ever dared to
He'll take his time before takin' advantage
Takin' her easy and slow

In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in forming the country music supergroup The Highwaymen, and formed a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that eschewed the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing. In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. As an actor, he is known for his roles in Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976) (which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor), Convoy (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980) and Blade (1998).
Kristofferson has said that he would like the first three lines of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" on his tombstone:
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free

I'm only 33, 34 in a few days and I've listened to Kris since I was 13. Very glad my dad got me into Kristofferson's music! Has to be considered the BEST Songwriter of all time. Songs are PURE Poetry! Nobody will ever tell me otherwise.

Shel Silverstein known for his children's stories was also a song writer. You may have heard A Boy Named Sue which Johnny Cash sung at San Quintin which is in Marin County where Shel lived on a houseboat in Sausalito. Shel also wrote The Winner sung by Kris and wrote.songs for Bobby Bare Jr and Dr. Hook.

Kris wrote this song with Shel Silvertein, who wrote tons and tons of songs for others including A Boy Named Sue and all the great early stuff from Dr.Hook. Look him up if you don't know about Shel, you'll be surprised what an amazing songwriter, poet and artist he was.
