Rain
Kris Kristofferson Rita Coolidge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rain (rain falling, always falling)
Pain (pain hurting, never-ending)
Tear (here comes tears of sorrow)
Fear (fear of today, tomorrow)
Cry (cry when there's no use crying)
Goodbye (goodbye there's no use trying)
It all runs together when your loved ones are gone
And your head spins in circles and you're lyin' with your face down in the rain
Salvation army band playin' in their all-night stand
Rain pourin' from the sky, blind people passin' by
No one will help 'em now, no one will even try
It all runs together

This is his time at last (this is his time) his life is fading fast
His faith is fled away (his faith is gone) he tries but cannot pray
This is the way we live (this is the way) we take and never give
It all runs together

Rain falling, always falling
Someone could have helped him but no one would try

'Cause their pride wouldn't let them and now he's gonna die there in the rain
Shall we gather at the rain? (shall we gather at the river?)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge's song "Rain" describe the deep feelings of pain, tears, and fear associated with loss, specifically the loss of loved ones. The rain serves as a metaphor for these feelings, which seem to be always falling and never-ending. The chorus gets more intense as it goes on, with the singer crying when there's no use crying and eventually saying goodbye because there's no use trying to hold on. The second verse describes a man who is dying while lying face down in the rain, with no one to help him despite the Salvation Army band playing nearby. The lyrics suggest that people's pride often gets in the way of helping others, and that life can be difficult and unfair.

The song is an emotional ballad that captures the sorrow of losing someone close. It speaks to the universal experience of grief and the difficulty of coping with loss. The rain serves as an apt metaphor for the heavy emotions that seem to come pouring down when one is grieving. The lyrics are vivid and heartfelt, with Kristofferson and Coolidge delivering an earnest and plaintive performance. The song also raises important social issues, including poverty, homelessness, and the marginalization of vulnerable groups.

Such a beautiful poignant song with perfect harmony.

As a teenager struggling with puberty/hormones/emotions and the "nobody understands me!" mentality, I lived their music. I still have almost every LP they made together (and some of their individual albums), but sadly no longer have a turntable so haven't listened to them for years. This brought back so many memories.

Loved them together

One of my all time favorite songs. They broke the mold with Kristofferson (although Larry Gatlin, who also sings backup, wrote the song.)
