Space Oddity
Kristen Wiig Lyrics

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

Ground Control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven, six)
Commencing countdown, engines on (five, four, three, two)
Check ignition and may God's love be with you (one, lift off)
This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

"This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows"

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you-

Here am I floating 'round a tin can
Far above the Moon

Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

Overall Meaning

The song "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, to which Kristen Wiig's parody song pays tribute, is a story about an astronaut named Major Tom who is traveling through space. The song begins with Ground Control (earth) communicating with Major Tom, telling him to prepare for his journey by taking his protein pills and putting on his helmet. The countdown begins, engines start, and Major Tom takes off.

As he travels further from Earth, Major Tom begins to feel isolated and disconnected, describing his environment as a "peculiar way" and noting that "the stars look very different today." He sings about feeling powerless, as he is "far above the world" and "there's nothing I can do." Despite his lonely state, Major Tom seems to have found a sense of peace, feeling "very still" as he continues his journey.

The song has been interpreted in many different ways, with some suggesting that it is meant to be a commentary on the human condition and feelings of loneliness and disconnection. The song gained popularity upon its release in 1969 and became one of Bowie's most iconic hits.

If any song were able to convey the emotions of reaching out and grabbing an opportunity instead of staying in the "comfort" of where you are right now - this song is it
