1. Kudu is a New York group … Read Full Bio ↴There are two bands with the same name:
1. Kudu is a New York group that includes Sylvia Gordon (vocals, bass), Deantoni Parks (drums), Nick Kasper (keyboards), and Peter Stoltzman (keyboards) and that blends jazz, soul, and electronica into a heady concoction of urban music. Parks' organic drumming often replicates digital beats and drum'n'bass technology, while a variety of textures and rhythms emanate from Kasper and Stoltzman's wall of keyboards. At the forefront is Gordon, whose lyrics and soulful pipes have become the group's hallmark. Kudu released their self-titled debut on Velour Recordings, a New York-based label, in 2001. The group has generated favorable press and a following in the jam band universe, a genre that developed an increasingly catholic reach throughout the '90s. Their profile grew considerably when they released Death of the Party in 2006.
2. Kudu was a collaborative three-piece featuring members from West London's broken beat massive. Dominic Stanton (Sonar Circle, Static Imprints, Domu, Blue Monkeys, Umod, Zoltar, Bakura, Rima, Vaceo, Yotoko, Legends Of The Underground), Paul Dolby (Seiji, Disorient, Opaque, Bugz in the Attic, Everyday People, Psyan, Oreja, Homecookin', Legends Of The Underground), and native New Zealander Mark de Clive-Lowe (12 Bit Rephugeez, Dub Basement, Spacecadets, Freesoul Sessions, Legends Of The Underground) teamed up to release a few productions in the early 2000s, including the "Space" 10" for Bitasweet. "Transit," the excellent B-side of the "Space" 10", made an appearance on Bitasweet's Phuturistic Dancin': Mission One compilation. Each producer's past involvements with the drum'n'bass movement played a major role in their beat-heavy work, which took on bits learned from jazz-funk, fusion, and Afro-beat.
Bar Star
Kudu Lyrics

BIG APPLE
Did you ever wonder why they call it the Big Apple?
Why, they invite, you, to take a bite, you, ought to know by now
It all began with Eve
Not so far back in history
Alluring Evelyn came in late 1803
And started a temple of love on 142 Bond st. And it branched from there
This naughty apple tree
Its roots took hold
In this decadent city
Sex, sex, politics dirty deeds, dirty tricks,
Sex, sex, politics, NYC needs a fix
Ho, hey, an apple a day
The Cortland marketing board tried to tuck it away
My, my, American as apple pie
If you believe all that, you believe in a lie
Its the biggest tree covered in golden leaves
You might be surprised at how far the branches reach
Have you been put on Earth to take a bite
To feed your need from the tree of life?
Than come to the Big Apple and stay for a while
In Kudu's song "Bar Star", the singer describes a man who is the life of the party, with his rhinestone rocketship, disco balls, and ability to leave glitter on the toilet seat. The man is charming and unapologetic, and he knows how to have a good time. The singer describes the scene at the bar as a "love bazaar", with bodies in motion around the bar star like planets in orbit. The bar star himself is compared to a cosmic wonder, and the singer exhorts him to shine his light on her. However, the bar star is also described as a dancin' fool who leaves lipstick stains all over his jeans, and who may lead a woman to a black hole. The song captures the energy and excitement of a night out at a bar, but also warns of the dangers of letting oneself get too caught up in the moment.
Overall, "Bar Star" is a celebration and critique of the party lifestyle. The bar star is simultaneously the embodiment of the party spirit and a cautionary tale of excess. Through the song, Kudu captures the contradictions of living for the moment, enjoying oneself, but also worrying about the consequences of one's actions.

Did you ever wonder why they call it the Big Apple?
The singer asks a rhetorical question about the origin of the nickname for New York City.
Why, they invite, you, to take a bite, you, ought to know by now
The singer suggests that the reason for the nickname is obvious; the city is inviting you to take a bite out of life and experience all it has to offer.
Alluring Evelyn came in late 1803, And started a temple of love on 142 Bond st., And it branched from there, This naughty apple tree, Its roots took hold, In this decadent city
The Big Apple's roots lie in the establishment of a brothel by a woman named Evelyn in the early 19th century. From there, the city's seedier side began to flourish and expand throughout the metropolis.
Sex, sex, politics dirty deeds, dirty tricks, Sex, sex, politics, NYC needs a fix
The artist highlights the connections between sex work and politics, suggesting that they are both corrupt and in need of reform.
Ho, hey, an apple a day, The Cortland marketing board tried to tuck it away, My, my, American as apple pie, If you believe all that, you believe in a lie
Playing on the popular saying 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away,' the artist alludes to the attempts by the Cortland apple marketing board to suppress knowledge of New York's 'biggest tree,' and suggests that the image of America as wholesome and clean is a false one.
Its the biggest tree covered in golden leaves, You might be surprised at how far the branches reach, Have you been put on Earth to take a bite, To feed your need from the tree of life? Than come to the Big Apple and stay for a while
The Big Apple is presented as a massive, fruitful tree with far-reaching branches that offers a taste of life's pleasures. With a rhetorical question, the singer invites listeners to consider their purpose and urges them to satisfy their desires by visiting the city.

@madsketcher
They're GREAT at capturing a visual mood to go along with their songs. When I listen to this, for example, I picture a hazy slow motion environment. I hope they stay around for at least a few more albums.
