Though the group has gone through a revolving door of members in recent years amid controversy and finger-pointing, and the Kumbia Kings of today are vastly different than what originated in Corpus Christi, Texas over 10 years ago but A.B. and Cruz were always the soul of the group.
Unfortunately, A.B. Quintanilla, Irvin "PeeWee" Salinas, as well as Selena's widower Chris Pérez, also decided to leave the group due to "internal dissention" in 2006. Cruz Martínez kept Los Kumbia Kings but changed the name to Los Super Reyes for legal issues. In October 2009, A.B. Quintanilla and Cruz Martínez have solved their differences, and announced that the Kumbia Kings will reunite for a series of concerts lasting from late 2009 through early 2010.

The lyrics of Kumbia Kings's song "If You Leave" depict a heartbroken man struggling to come to terms with his partner's decision to leave him. The lyrics are filled with raw emotions of despair and confusion. He is in disbelief that after all they have been through, his partner wants to leave him. The man is pleading with his partner not to leave him because he cannot imagine his life without her. He is also asking her what he did wrong and what he can do to make her stay.
The chorus of the song carries the same theme of begging the partner not to leave. The man is confessing his love for her and asking her not to take her love from him as he will go crazy without her. The second part of the chorus has him pleading with her not to make him break down and cry as she is his everything.
