Blackbird
Kurt & The Warblers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night

Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise,

You were only waiting for this moment to arise,
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kurt & The Warblers' song Blackbird convey a message of hope and perseverance in the face of adversity. The blackbird, often used as a symbol of freedom, is singing in the dead of the night, when darkness and despair are all around. The line "Take these broken wings and learn to fly" is a metaphorical representation of picking oneself up when they are broken and learning to soar again. The bird has sunken eyes, suggesting that it has been through difficult times before, but it is time for it to learn to see again and be free.

The chorus "Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly, Into the light of the dark black night" is a call to action, urging the bird to take flight and leave the darkness behind. The repetition of this line emphasizes the importance of following through with this action, and the use of the phrase "light of the dark black night" is a clever way of suggesting that there is always hope, even in the darkest of times. The final repetition of the line "You were only waiting for this moment to arise" indicates that the bird has been waiting for this chance to take flight and be free, and now is the time to seize it.

Why I love this scene:
1. Kurt's voice sounds great.
Kurt's always using the higher pitched side of his voice, and while I appreciate the beauty of that side of him, I prefer this lower key that he uses in both Baby It's Cold Outside with Blaine (Another of my favorite scenes in Glee--no, in any show!), and this beautiful song Blackbird. His voice is soothing and beautiful in this scene.
2. The song is beautiful.
The lyrics in this song are pretty, yes, but the tune and the notes, I think it was written very well.
3. Blaine finally realizes his love for Kurt. (FINNALLLYYYY)
Can we all admit it? Since Kurt met Blaine, like in this song, "you were only waiting for this moment to arrive". I think that lyric is kind of perfect for this, since Blaine was waiting for Kurt his whole life, he says it at some point. Klaine is such a perfect romance, and no matter how many times they fight I will always believe in them as my favorite couple in any show. And the way Blaine realizes is stunning, acted well, and just romantic. .
4. The acting is spot on.
Need I say more? Kurt (Chris Colfer) looks genuinely sad, and Blaine looks like he's truly having an epiphany.

the warblers singing a song mourning a dead bird, the way blaine looks at kurt, then looking away as if realizng he has fallen in love, then looking back at kurt, this might be the most beautiful scene in the entire show.

I just thought about the fact that a Warbler is a bird too

Tmara aramT

This song isn’t actually about a bird it is actually about a black women fighting a racism scandal but it is just like a well know kinda term like some guys call girls chicks

Celinha BR

@Tmara aramT Paul McCartney wrote this song about the struggles of black women during the civil rights movements of thee 60s. Bird is because it was how women were called by the guys in England at that time.
