Blame It On My Youth
Kurt Elling Lyrics

and then you became the bored one
and i became a toy that brought you joy one day
a broekn toy that you chose to throw away
If i excpected love when first we kissed
blame it on my youth
if only just for you I did exsist
I remember eveything
like a child of 3
you meant more than anything
all the world to me
If you were on my mind all night and day
blame it on my youth
If I forget to eat and sleep and pray
blame it on my youth
If i cried a little bit when first I learned the truth
don't blame it on my heart
blame it on my youth!
The lyrics of Kurt Elling's "Blame It On My Youth" depict a story of unrequited love and youthful naivety. The song expresses the singer's feelings of being discarded by a former lover who once adored him but later grew apathetic and eventually abandoned the relationship. The singer describes himself as a toy that brought temporary joy to the lover, only to be suddenly dismissed and discarded like a broken toy.
The lyrics also suggest that the singer was deeply in love with the former lover, who meant everything to him. He nostalgically remembers the early days of their relationship and how he was willing to do anything for the lover, even forgetting to eat or sleep. He blames his own naivety and idealistic view of love for his belief that the lover would reciprocate his feelings, saying "if I expected love when first we kissed, blame it on my youth."
The overall theme of the song is the sadness and regret that comes with youthful infatuation and unrequited love. The singer acknowledges that his own inexperience and immaturity may have led to his being hurt, but ultimately finds solace in blaming it all on his youth.
