Lost Highway
Kurt Nilsen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a rollin' stone all alone and lost
For a life of sin I have paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
Just another guy on the lost highway

Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine

A woman's lies make a life like mine
On the day we met, I went astray
I started rolling down that lost highway

I was just a lad, nearly twenty two
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
And now I'm lost, too late to pray
I started rolling down that lost highway

Now boys don't start to ramblin' round
On this road of sin are you sorrow bound
Take my advice or you'll curse the day
I started rollin' down that lost highway

Started rolling down that lost highway

Overall Meaning

Kurt Nilsen's song Lost Highway is a melancholic account of a lone traveler's journey down a metaphorical lost highway. The song speaks of a life unfulfilled, of regret, and of the consequences of the choices one makes. Nilsen describes himself as a "rollin' stone," who wanders aimlessly after having paid the cost for a life of sin. He laments his decisions and his inability to rectify his mistakes when he says, "now I'm lost, too late to pray."

Nilsen's use of a deck of cards and a jug of wine and a woman's lies is evocative of a life of debauchery and deceit. The unnamed woman is the cause of his misfortunes, and he started rolling down that lost highway on the day he met her. The song is a cautionary tale, and Nilsen admonishes men not to venture down the road of sin, or they'll regret it. The last line of the song, "Started rolling down that lost highway," reminds us that once we start on a path, it's challenging to turn back.

@lulabell79_31

I finally remember the voice Kurt Nilsen reminds me of...Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies, especially in the song "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" the one that starts like this:

Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed him so hard.

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm...
