He became an MC in his own right around 1977, and changed his name to Kurtis Blow (as in a body blow) at the suggestion of his manager, future rap mogul Russell Simmons. Blow began his career in New York City in the mid-1970s, when he was a breakdancer until switching to DJing under the name Kool DJ Kurt and then finally rapping. He was the first rapper to record a full length album on a major label (1979). This occurred after recording "Christmas Rappin", his first single; during this time, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang became the first hit for hip hop. The whole field was derided as a fad, though, and thus there was much resistance to signing Blow. In 1980 he opened for reggae legend Bob Marley at the Madison Square Garden where he performed for an audience of 20,000.
He has appeared in several feature films, including Krush Groove and The Show. A duet with rock icon Bob Dylan called "Street Rock", appeared on Blow's 1986 album, Kingdom Blow[1] by special arrangement of Wayne Garfield (Garfield and Blow co-wrote, "Reasons For Wanting You" on Kingdom Blow)[2] and Debra Byrd, American Idol's head vocal coach and former Dylan backup singer (see album credits).[citation needed]
And in 2004, he recorded the song "Hey Everybody" with Max C and Bomfunk MC's for their album, Reverse Psychology. He also co-wrote songs with The Fat Boys, including their signature songs, "Fat Boys" (1984) and "The Fat Boys Are Back" (1985).
Kurtis Blow also became the first hip hop musician embraced by the mainstream advertising industry with his appearance in a commercial for the soft drink Sprite.
He is currently a DJ on Backspin 43, which is the old school hip hop station on the Sirius Satellite Radio service. According to an interview with I Suppose Productions, he is also currently a theology major at Nyack College working to enter the ministry. According to Blow, "Man's real telos... the real purpose in life, is to serve God."

We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketballWe love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
(Now rapping basketball, Number 1, Kurtis Blow)
Basketball is my favorite sport
I like the way they dribble up and down the court
Just like I'm the king on the microphone
So is Dr. J and Moses Malone
I like slam dunks, take me to the hoop
My favorite play is the alley-oop
I like the pick-and-roll, I like the give-and-go
'Cause it's basketball, uh, Mister Kurtis Blow
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
I used to go to dinner, then take the girl
To see Tiny play against Earl The Pearl
And Wilt, Big O, and Jerry West
Basketball has always been my thing
I like Magic, Bird, and Bernard King
And number 33, my man Kareem
Is the center on my starting team
(To the hoop, y'all, watch out, watch out)
(In yo face, here comes the rest)
Clyde, Rick Barry, and Pistol Pete
Now these players could never be beat
Isiah, and Iceman, too
Just give 'em the ball, and then you chalk up two
Dantley and Wilkins are on the scene
And Ralph Sampson is really mean
Bill Russell didn't take no junk
And Darryl Dawkins got a monster dunk
(To the hoop, y'all, yes)
(Ha-ho, here I go, face)
(Watch me, D up, D up, D up, sucker)
(Ah, you can't check me, man)
(I get on down)
(Oh yeah, I like this basketball)
(D up now, here I go, in yo face)
(Swish!)
(Oh yeah!)
(To the, to the hoop, y'all)
(It's basketball)
Tell me, were you in the joint
The night Wilt scored a hundred points?
Or when Celtics won titles back-to-back
And didn't give nobody no kind of slack?
Or when Dr. J shook the whole damn team
With moves that came right out of a dream?
Or when Willis Reed stood so tall
Playing D with desire? It's basketball!
They're playing basketball (to the hoop, y'all)
We love that basketball (yeah, yeah, girl)
They're playing basketball (oh yeah)
We love that basketball (to the hoop, to the hoop, to the hoop, y'all)
They're playing basketball (shoot the pill)
We love that basketball (bass line, slam dunk)
They're playing basketball (D up, D up, D up)
We love that basketball (oh yeah)
I get the ball and then I go and play
Like a superstar in the NBA
The forwards, the centers, and all the guards
The ones you see on the bubblegum cards
Me and homeboy would go one-on-one
'Cause playing the game is a lot of fun
Sit by the TV and watch 'em all
'Cause Kurtis Blow is rappin' basketball
"Now did you see that boy Pearl the other night
Take that thing up in Ewing's face?"
"He's bad, but I like Michael Jordan, man"
"Man, do y'all remember the old days?
The old days when the Reverend Dr. J
Used to take the whole team, boy
Used to do it to 'em
Used to burn 'em, used to burn 'em
I saw him burn Cazzie Russell one night
Man, it was embarrassing"
"Hey, y'all see Bernard King, man?"
"Oh Bernard King is my man
I like that nigga"
"Knicks play ball"
"Oh they been playin'"
"Bill Russell was the man"
"Oh, but Wilt usually take him, man, Wilt"
"My man Bill Russell had the championship ring
Wilt just had them points, that's all he ever had"
"I don't know, I don't know about rings, man"
They're playing basketball (the ball, y'all)
We love that basketball (the pill, the pill, the pill)
They're playing basketball (D up, D up)
We love that basketball (oh yeah, to the hoop)
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball
We love that basketball
They're playing basketball (to the, to the hoop)
We love that basketball (to the hoop, to the, to the, to the hoop)
They're playing basketball (swish!)
