01. not what you see
Kutless Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do you know why we always fight
To be better, better than you
And you better than me
I am not what you see, oh no
Not much more than a slave I wish to be
I am not what you see
Nothing more, a slave I will be
How could I ever think to be more
than the one who created me
I watched him do all that he said, his words were
"Be a servant to all"
I am not what you see, oh no
Not much more than a slave I wish to be
I am not what you see
Not much more a slave I should be
Nothing more, a slave I will be
Only one deserves this exaltation
Only one deserves this elevation
But even He, He laid it down to serve on bended knee
I am not what you see, oh no
Not much more than a slave I wish to be
I am not what you see
Not much more a slave I should be
Nothing more, a slave I will be
The lyrics to "Not What You See" by Kutless are a reflection on humility and the desire to serve. The song addresses the tensions and conflicts that arise from the constant need to be better than others. The singer admits that they are not much more than a slave, and that they should aspire to be nothing more than a humble servant.
The song emphasizes the importance of recognizing one's place in the world and acknowledging the role that God plays in guiding our lives. The lyrics suggest that we should strive to be more like Jesus, who humbled himself by becoming a servant to others.

I completely agree. And it makes me mad that Bethel Music's cover of "King of my heart" is what's sung in churches today instead of Kutless' version, which is superior in all ways.
