Give Us Clean Hands
Kutless Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We bow our hearts, we bend our knees
Oh Spirit, come make us humble
We turn our eyes from evil things
Oh Lord, we cast down our idols

So give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

We bow our hearts, we bend our knees
Oh Spirit, come make us humble
We turn our eyes from evil things
Oh Lord, we cast down our idols

So give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

And God, let us be a generation that seeks
Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob
And God, let us be a generation that seeks
Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob

You're my God, You're my God, oh oh

God, let us be a generation that seeks
Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob
And God, let us be a generation that seeks
Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob

And God, let us be a generation that seeks
Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob
And God, let us be a generation that seeks
Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob

Jesus, You are
You're my God, You're my God

You're my God, You're my God
You're my God

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kutless's song Give Us Clean Hands are a prayerful plea for purity and humility. The song begins with the lines "We bow our hearts, we bend our knees / Oh Spirit, come make us humble," which express an attitude of surrender and submission to God. The next line, "We turn our eyes from evil things / Oh Lord, we cast down our idols," reinforces this theme of repentance and turning away from sin. The chorus repeats the request for purity: "Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts / Let us not lift our souls to another."

The second verse repeats the same message as the first, with the same opening lines and the same refrain. However, it adds a further dimension by asking God to make the singers part of a generation that seeks after Him: "And God, let us be a generation that seeks / Seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob." The final lines of the song declare that Jesus is the singers' God.

Overall, the song is a call to surrender to God's will, turn away from sin and idols, and seek after Him with clean hands and pure hearts.

I love this! Psalm 24. It's been speaking to me this past week. The Lord has planted this in me. Such a blessing! My son turned to Christ before I did when he was a teen. He played Kutlass CDs and they filled out home with such joy and the light of Christ. Thank you, Kutlass for being such a good band whose words ring out Jesus!
