Identity
Kutless Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I’ve been walking on a straight line, straight line
Scared to let the world see my failures, who I am, or who I’ve been
I’ve been waiting for somebody else to
Take the chance that I am so afraid to
I don’t know how to find myself am I the only one the only one
I am so tired of trying to prove it I’m never gonna do it alone
God I need You to be my identity
It’s always easier to hide behind that
Camouflage that keeps our hearts so guarded
But there’s no shame when we surrender everything to You
Everything to You
I want to see the world change, see the system cave in
You pull our hearts from the ashes
The cry of the captive is rising
Kutless's song Identity is a plea for God to be the source of the singer's identity. The singer has spent too long trying to present a flawless, straight-lined exterior to the outside world, but feels that they are hiding behind camouflage and guarding their true self. They are afraid to show their failures and are waiting for someone else to take the chance and reveal themselves first. The singer is tired of constantly trying to prove themselves and recognizes that they cannot do it alone. They do not know how to find their true identity and wonder if they are the only one struggling with this. The solution presented in the chorus is a desire for God to move through them like a river, providing the identity they seek. The singer wants to surrender everything and have no shame in doing so. They want to see the world change and the cries of those who are captive to be answered.
The song speaks to the struggle of finding one's true identity in a world that often values appearance and presentation over authenticity. It acknowledges the pressure to hide one's failures and present a flawless facade to the world. The desire for someone else to take the first step highlights the fear of vulnerability and the need for validation from others. The solution presented is an appeal to faith in God and the hope that surrendering everything to him will provide a sense of identity and purpose.
